mazdaspeed 3 2009
hey guys i jus got my new forge valve in today and i wanted to know ive heard the blue is the right spring for the mazdaspeed 3 but do i put the shims in that came with it or do i leave them out and if i do insall the shims do install both or on and were do i put them top or bottom of spring thanks

stock boost? You're going to get a variety of response / search results.
Safest bet IMHO is yellow spring. On forge's website states:

Green 5 - 15 psi
Yellow 15-23 psi
Blue 23 - 30 psi
Red 30 + psi

the shims will increase / decrease the force of the spring by compressing it so you can change it around.
I am using yellow. I've swapped shims in and out. I had blue in there but I felt it didn't operate as it should on stock boost so I swapped back to yellow.

What are your mods? Alot of us are running blue w/ 1 or blue w/ 2. Im running blue with 2 and it feels strong to me, not too much flutter. Its been that way for about 3 weeks now, getting boost gauge this weekend so I can be sure what I'm boosting. My mods are SRI, TIP, TestPipe, and Trans Mount. Someone else asked this same question, do a search and you should find out what everyone else is running, or check the BOV FAQ in the beginning of the forced induction section.

i dont have much mods i only have short ram intake and soon will be getting new inlet pipe when i got the valve i opened it up and found yellow spring with no sims so best b et leave that in?

thats how mine was. Comes out of the box yellow with no shims. Try it with blue, seems to be what works best for our cars. I did about an hour of trial and error with spring and shim combos. Drove about 6 or 7 miles on each with mixing WOT shifting at 5700ish and then some shifting around 3000. Theres a post on here from patty at forge with what he recommends for us. Ill try and find it quick.

thanks alot bud f im gunna do the driving around larning by trial and error what am i looking for exactly on each run

Basically the way the car feels, like i threw the red shim in there and it didnt feel like it boosted well, kinda sluggish. Switched to blue with 2, boosted well, held boost, little flutter at light throttle. Blue with 1 was about the same, but with 2 felt a little stronger. But that was what i experienced. Others say blue with no shims or with 1 and have roughly same setup as i do.

Patty from Forge has said MANY MANY times the suggested springs on the site are WRONG and we should be using the BLUE spring stock. As you add mods you add Shims.

Basically you should have flutter at light boost and no flutter at WOT. If you don't have any flutter then you have it set too low. If you have Surge then too high.

When I had mine I ran Blue with 2 Shims with FMIC, MS CAI, Test Pipe, MBC at 18PSI with Map Clamp and it ran great and held boost good.

Again Stock should be BLUE. If you're using yellow then you need to put in the Blue. If you don't believe what I say then just do a search for Patty Forge and read him telling you the same thing.

I know it's been mentioned before, but I installed my forge this weekend and still wasnt higher than 13-14psi. The stock hose clamp on the rec. hose and vacuum line were very loose on the forge and so I went out and picked up some new band style clamps that you tighten with a screwdriver. Now I'm holding 15psi and seeing spikes of 16-17, I don't know if I'm more excited about the forge or the new clamps :) I still am experimenting with the best spring/shim combination but wanted to pass along what I learned.

I just put mine on an hour ago and the yellow made 17-18 psi, the blue stock psi (16). Blue is staying in as I'm trying to make the most of stock boost levels. AEM CAI, PG TIP only other mods.

hey guys i tried the blue spring and the car really didnt feel any diffrent i dont have a boost gauge in the car so dont really know what im pushing but i got a tip from ken at protege garage to try out he red spring and it did make a diffrence very snappy throttle resonse and the car feels stronger but has anyone ever ran into this i put the valve on the it sounded liek te engine had a tick noise to it car runs the same but just wondering i think tomorrow im gunna see what hapens with the blue and shims

this is news to me. swapped to blue spring to try it out thanks for that info.

Definitely email Forge if you're unsure. I'm running an AEM CAI as a SRI. I started with the yellow and have been experimenting with blue shim. The final result is the Blue with one shim. Not sure if this was said, but the shim should always go down in the piston. Not on top of the spring. Good luck!
