Hello all, I just signed up today looking for some help. Wife bought 09 mazda 5 new now with 14k. Car has had little troubles which dealer has not helped with but for now I want to ask for advise on biggest prob. The hvac blower started making loud noise in high speed like a bad bearing then stopped working altogether. I checked all fuses I could find listed then took to dealer. Dealer said they found mouse nest in car and that was prob and will cost 4 to 6 hundred to fix. So I checked it out when we got home and see where mice were but it is nowhere there would cause prob, no wires chewed. She drives car every day so they prob only were there one night. they were in engine compartment near firewall, anyway I took out cabin filters and nothing in there so how do I test blower cause I cant even find it. Any help will be appreciated. Tedd

If mice got in it and ruined it somehow, thats a problem with the design and should be fixed under warranty. Anyone who makes a car that can have a damaged blower with 14K miles on it due to mice needs to wake up. It should be interesting to see if you chopped a mouse up and start getting a nasty smell.

Sounds like Mazda has a problem with blower motors my 08 cx9 no blower from front but rear a/c is great [if I could only drive from the back seat] blower turns on & off when its on It make a bearing noise [I only stays on for 1-2 min then off for 30-45 min] dropped at dealer will find out tomorrow.
dealer said they will only fix if we pay 5to7 hundred which we cant afford. The tires on car have never had good ride (lumpy) after they charged us for rotation I took to tire specialist and he said two rims are bent and all four tires are defective but dealer does not believe him. I found fan today but can not figure out how to remove, guess thats why they charge so much. If anyone has book could you just tell me from which side can I best get at it. I think pass side but it is in middle of car and I dont want to take whole car apart. There was no smell at all, just pieces of isulation in filters and I can see some in fan. Car is driven every day so must have been overnight. Tedd

This would qualify under your comprehensive coverage (if you have it). Call your insurance company and let them know the dealer advised you the mice created some mechanical issues. Insurance company will look into it. If they feel it isn't a problem with the mice infestation then you can use that as leverage when speaking with Mazda USA to cover the issue under warranty.

If I recall correctly, the blower motor is reached from the drivers side.
Were there HOLES in the filters?
Also make sure you do not hot plug the electrical connector that is mounted on the filter access panel, as it will fry the blower speed control.

there were no holes in filter but there was nest remnants, I can see fan from valence and there is some stuff caught in there. It is a terrible design, once I took valence cover off I could see how easy mice can get through the huge holes in pan and the cover grill. What do you mean hot plug the connector? How can I jump blower to see if it works after clearing stuff out? If fan was jammed what would blow besides fuse which I checked. Thanks for the advise, Tedd
I think mazdadude means to make sure the fan is off or disconnect the battery before working on the motor. You can alway test the blower motor by connected it to a battery pack (ie. 12 or 14V cordless drill battery). This way you will not have to worry about finding which wire(s) to bypass the fan control, just find the motor's power connector, unplug it and test it with a cordless drill battery pack.
However, I do not know how easy it would be to find the motor's power connector and how much space you have to access the connector. Good luck with your repair.

Thanks davebert, that is exactly what I meant about "hot-plugging". I blew my own blower MOS FET this way.(hand)
From my 2006 FSM, it appears that access to the power connector for the blower is from the drivers side footwell. In addition, the FSM states that a special tool is needed to install/remove blower motor. Now, I wish I could say that everything is the same for your 2009, but I do not have access to a FSM for that year. I know that there were some HVAC improvements that were made for the 2009 model year, so there might/should be some changes to parts from the 2006 model.
You are heading down the right path, there are 2 parts to test.
Part 1: Test for voltage supplied at the blower motor harness connector.
Part 2: Disconnect blower harness connector and apply 12~14 volts directly to the blower motor and check function.

Thanks for the help guys, I was able to test fan and it is working which is good so it looks like the mos fet is blown. Would the debris in fan cause the resistor to blow, isnt the fuse supposed to protect that? I am just wondering if I should fight to get dealer to cover the part or should I just bite the bullet and buy it online. Man I am glad I dont have to take that fan out because it looks like a nightmare! Tedd
