Help on O2 Sensor

So a couple of questions. have '07 CX-9 with CEL on.

mech says it's the o2 sensor, left bank. I don't believe there is a left bank, but upper and lower.

quoted me a price of $196, which just so happens to be $10 more than the orignal price I've seen listed all over the internet.

Part number seems to be CY0118861, which according to diagrams I'm seeing, appears to be the "upper" sensor.

Can anyone help confirm this for me ?

Also, it looks like there are a slew of aftermarket O2 sensors that appear to be equivalent from Bosch, delphi, etc. Sold as "Direct Replacement". Has anyone had any experience with these brands ?

Is it worth going aftermarket ?

And lastly, is this a simple job to do yourself ?

Is there an Autozone near you? They can pull the code for free. Left and right refers to the V6 banks looking from the back of the engine, but there should be 4 sensors altogether, two front (or upper) ones (left and right) and two rear (or lower) ones (left and right). The part number you mentioned, CY0118861, is for the front (upper) sensor, left and right are identical.

As for aftermarket, I always try to use the OEM parts, or find who made the OEM and buy that brand. It's likely, but I'm not 100% sure, that these are made by Denso, and then the Denso part # would be 2344372. Denso part is about $80, while the OEM is about $180. But, like I said, I'm not sure that the OEM is made by Denso.

Finally, it's a simple job on most cars, but you need to have a special socket. Don't know about this car, since I'm not near it, but I can try to look tomorrow. On the cars I've done this, you need to unplug the harness, remove 1 or 2 plastic clips where the wire is held to the engine, and then unscrew the old sensor. If it's stuck, you may need to spray some PB Blaster or similar thread release stuff and wait. Finally, you need to put some anti-seize compound on the new sensor before you screw it in and tighten to about 25 ft-lb.

Each bank has two sensors. Front (upper) sensor (no matter which side) is installed in exhaust manifold and rear (lower) sensor in catalytic converter.

In addition to Autozone pulling the code, you could invest in a ScanGuageII... Awesome little devices that plug into the OBDII port inside (under steering column) and can pull codes, tell you real time information, and give you custom gauges. You can mount it in the interior and it will tell you a bunch of stuff that the computer already knows, but there is no way to see normally (i.e. throttle position, transmission temp, intake temp, exact water temp, O2 readings, ERT, battery voltage, etc.) They run about $150, but are very helpful for diagnosing issues on your own.

I have a ODB2 reader thats bluetooth that i bought off Ebay for like $25 shipped. Does most everything the expensive scanners do at a small portion of the price. I use the Torque application to run it.

Ahh yes! I forgot about the bluetooth ones... I got my ScanGuageII back in 2010 before I had a smartphone, so that's why I enjoy it. In addition, it's pretty easy to mount up and look *almost* factory... But yeah, if I was doing it now I would check out the bluetooth and apps for sure.

Any issues with the audio system being hooked up via bluetooth and using the app at the same time?

Thanks for all the great responses. After doing some research it looks like the part number I mentioned is made by NTK. Further research indicates their 22046 sensor is essentially the same part, but on $60 as opposed to $190..... not sure what the difference is.

Either way, this is for the upper sensor. Both left and right uppers (ie front and back uppers) are the same.

No I just need to figure out how to install the damn thing since this sensor is the one between the engine and the firewall.

Any suggestions on the install ?

In all truth, i havent even had to use it on the CX9 yet. But i use it in my 97 626 pretty often, along with my 05 Mazda6 which i originally bought it for.
