a couple times a day while driving my shifter pops out of gear randomly. it also feels like sometimes the shifter starts vibrating and it feels like it wants to pop out of gear. it mostly happens when i am in second gear slowing down. help me

youve ruined the syncronizers(sp*) by grinding gears or poor downshifts. I had this happen in my civic. It was my first manual tranny car. Good luck w/ the repairs. until then youll have to hold it in gear all the time.

Not going to lie I'm new at manual that's probably what happened warranty should cover this I would assume it only had 14500 km on it

IDK about warranty covering it. I am thinking that this would be listed as a wear and tear item. Thus leaving you responsible for the repairs. If your dealership is nice, they may cut you a deal on it. I could be wrong though. Id say wait to see what some others chime in with, before pulling the trigger on the dealer visit.

Why don't you try adjusting the shifter first? There's a how to here or on that other mazdaspeeed site, I can't remember which. It's on Youboob as well.

Then, replace your stock rear motor mount with something good. Then see how your shifting works.

Weve run into one other instance with this in a 2009 Tribute. We found the shifter cables where wanting to return to a set position (Nuetral pretty much) due to the sleeves. We replaced them and havnt had a problem since with this customer. This is something that would be covered under warranty for your car. I would take it to the dealer and explain the situation. No need to exaggerate on your driving habits as that is necessary. Also, if your syncros where going out, you would be grinding into that gear when you shift pretty repetitively. Is it happeneing with your foot on the gas?

im not a bad driver i would consider my shifting is average i grind probably once a day or so. im going to go to the dealer explain everything and see if they can find out. but it only pops out of gear once or twice a day usually in second gear and when im not pushing the gas.

I'm not meaning to be harsh but you grind gears once a day and don't consider yourself a bad driver? Um, I kick myself in the nuts if I grind gears ever. I'd bet that's a fairly consistent sentiment

...and yeah, grinding a gear once a day for a year + is going to hurt the transmission and, it's hardly Mazda's fault. However, go in there and see what they say.

Just because I've been a little mean to you, here's the adjusting shifter video I told you about:

This is not a good vehicle to have as your first manual trans car, I'll add.

I consider my shifting average and I grind a gear, and by "a gear" I mean 3rd, two or three times a year. Not knocking you mazda_dan just interesting how perceptions can vary.

2nd did fall out on me once, under very hard braking while autocrossing. Pretty amusing little event too. Didn't realize anything had happened until I was back hard on the gas but I wasn't going anywhere.

Have you noticed if it's the same RPM every time your shifter pops out?

Driving ability aside, you'll all see a major reduction in grinding scenarios by replacing the rear motor mount, getting some shifter bushes and putting a short shift plate on. Plus, junking the oem trans fluid and replacing it with Ford MT synthetic or Redline MT-90 will slick up the box a fair bit.

he said it is happening mostly in second. And under de-acceleration. Which leads me to believe the grinding is done when shifting from first to second under WOT most likely.

This was the same thing that happened to me with my civic. It was my first MT car and also 10 years ago....lol. But s*** happens, so no big deal, just like i did, you live and learn. Im willing to bank on it being syncros. Its no engine mount or shifter aadjustment. Good luck OP

Well, synchros are not weak in this box, like sh*tbox Civic transmissions so, They're dead from extreme abuse if you're correct. if you're right, matching revs on downshifts should improve the situation.

I would not totally discount gearshift/drivetrain movement/alignment as cause. Gear engagement issues are a known problem on this car, as long as the stock rear motor mount is in place. The drivetrain moves around too much and it misaligns the shift cables momentarily, causing missed shifts, especially under high load.

join the club of a shot 2nd gear synchro. u are one of many many many mazdaspeed owners to experience such a joy. thanks again mazda

Watched arron's car do this in a ride along so sucked since it killed a good time
Best reason in the world to NOT have some ten pound weight on the end of your stick

of course, the WTF look on his face as he fed throttle in a false neutral was PRICELESS

mainly cuz he beats me like a drum on a regular basis

my 2 cents?

1 get the car checked by a driver. dealer etc
2 correct any mechanical defficiencieees
3 learn and understand what is mechanically happening when you depress a clutch pedal and move a lever

ok thnx for the advice i dont think it is once a day maybe like once every three days or so but it only happens around the same rpm.and its not grinding every three days its either grinding or missing a shift i just cant get used to the speed 3 the msp is much easier to shift. but i a getting a tranny mount and also im going to get it checked out from a dealer.

ok its at the dealer tomorrow they are going to look at it. it got really bad these past few days it only pops out of gear in second and when im slowing down. i didnt take off my cold air intake or aluminum shifter bushings the warranty should have a problem with that.

I have had the same problem with the shifter popping out of second gear, but only when running AutoX events and getting hard on the brakes. I have tried everything from changing tranny oil, shifter weight, short shifter, etc....but it all comes down to the synchros.

ya im getting my baby back tomorrow it under warranty and they replaced the two second gear synchros and some plastic fork thing.

I knew it was synchros (wink)

Im glad there fixing it for you under warranty.. Thats great!! From now on though you should try rev matching your shifting a little better. And be kind to her...lol. Good luck(cabpatch)
