Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

the 40-60 mph test is usually based on top-gear acceleration (although I don't know how they would consider a CVT in that manner). Mashing that gas pedal would probably produce lower times for each vehicle....

As per certain Honda fan - they dont even feel the transmission on their car (not sure what this means, is it electric or what)

Yeah, I never understood this either. At the end of the day, the Honda has a CVT, and there is nothing fun about a CVT in my opinion. CR-V may win these reviews, but I won't be driving it. Besides it's butt ugly appearance, CVT is an absolute deal/fun killer to me. Win everything it wants to, it doesn't change those 2 glaring marks against it.

Edit: And someone should tell the slow-ass CR-V I was stuck behind (in the left lane, where else?) on the way to work today about these 40-60 numbers. Not only did I have to stare at it's ugly wide behind, but it was going at granny speed. (rofl)

I would say reason #1 from the OP is also the #1 reason most people would choose a CX5 over a CRV

But really, it's all about reason #1. And even mango should admit that.

Spot on for both points in our case. #3 was I also didn't mind NOT having a turbo under the hood for relatively equal day to day driveability out of Mazda's NA engine.

#1, 2, 3 combined with that new smooth / quiet ride that is an absolute joy and how much more it was for the CRV to get it with equipped with the featured that we wanted the CX-5 was a perfect fit for us.

For the people who insist the CRV is hands-down always better:

The pricing example that applied to us: Here in Canada to get the bulk of the features that mattered to us on the CRV compared to the CX-5 GS with comfort + iActivesense packages we now have in our driveway we needed to jump up to the EX-L trim. Via the manufacturers build sites the MSRP + on the road taxes in our area resulted in a $1,600 premium on the road for the CRV EX-L and that still didn't have LED headlights or rear cross traffic alert that are on the CX-5 at our trim/option level.

To get those additional features in the Honda you have to get up to Touring which is even more $$$. Not to mention the higher interest rate on the CRV and the Honda dealer being much less willing to try and earn our business (much less willing to negotiate a worthwhile discount / purchase package).

Now if that doesn't matter to you that's fine. But the fact that it mattered to me or other CX-5 buyers out there doesn't make it wrong.

This is just a real world example of how even though the numbers and specs are better on paper for the CRV it doesn't necessarily translate it to being the "better" car or "better" buy for everyone especially when the CX-5 is as good as it is.

It just goes back to what I had previously mentioned about people's needs / wants / priorities and how they apply those to their new purchase.

lol. happened to us yesterday... got stuck behind one for several miles going 55 in a 60. couldn't help myself but to crack a joke to the GF in the passenger seat.

on the other hand, a trashy derelict in a camry passed me on the left side breakdown lane this morning. he came out of no where, and I was already doing 70 in the passing lane of a 60 mph zone. he didn't even give me a chance to move over. then he tailgated the hell out of several other vehicles and made a couple in incredibly dangerous passes. I wouldn't have batted an eye if he had flipped over. just would have hoped he didn't take out anyone else in the process.

Oh god! Yeah seen my fair deal of those recently too. I called the police line for aggressive driving for a couple of them as they were doing some stuff that could take people out. One guy was in a truck with Texas plates, the other guy was a beater Toyota car.

And of course, there were those BMW folks... ;)

CVT has the advantage here as it will put you in the correct gear keep it there. In terms of acceleration, a CVT will be better than a 6 speed in the Mazda as it will keep you in the meat of its power band the entire way. It doesn't need to change/hunt gears like a typical 6 speed transmission.

I didn't have time to get his plate number, and he eventually took an off-ramp that wasn't part of my commute.

however, I have called the police over several seemingly drunk drivers, gave them plenty of notice as to where they would be at what time and on what road... and never have I seen them respond. I don't really bother much anymore... but this guy this morning was hyper aggressive.

Yeah...I always wondered if anything ever came from calling. At least I can say I tried to do something I guess.

you missed the point.

It's sort of a price/resale problem. If you put $30K into both cars the CRV will be worth about 10% more in 5 years. But, $30K in both cars doesn't produce an equal product. The CR-V will cost a bit more, probably, but it's really dependent on what you value in the car to get there. A EX vs a Touring with i-activesense is a pretty equal car feature wise, except for, uh, some variables. A GT vs EX-L is a pretty clear winner for the GT. A decked out GT vs a decked out Touring is probably pretty close on features. But, then there's safety and reliability, things the Mazda isn't projecting that well for, but that ride.

It always comes back to, at least for me, ride vs value, and right now, the Mazda has the better ride. A new CR-V would have almost the same ride as my CX-5 on the commute but the 2017 CX-5 would be a real improvement. On the other hand, just about any decent sedan would significantly improve my commute too.

Just tell them it's like a "Sport Mode" with no mileage penalty, and nearly zero delay. They will be amazed.

Sometimes they care, sometimes not. Dunno what the rhyme or reason is really.

yeah, especially when one time we were going to pass the town's police station in less than 10 minutes. and when we did arrive at that point there were several police cars there, so there were definitely officers inside the building, but none to intercept the driver. there was also the sheriffs' station across the street... none of them came out either.

that bozo had been crossing the rumble stripped center line for over 10 miles that I witnessed....

This is why I carry a firearm on my person. The police are there for filling out paperwork. Not stopping crime or protecting you. (no, I do not mean I carry because of drunk drivers, I carry because I am my own security team, so to speak, because I cannot afford one like a celebrity, and the police legally are not obligated to protect you, this has been proven in court.)

our CRV CVT has much more delay than our CX5 if you mash the gas.

Yeah, sounds like the 2013 I test drove before I bought my CX-5. And the other CVT CUV's I test drove back then.

I will concede that maybe the new ones are better in this regard but at the end of the day it's still "It's not too bad" or it's "pretty good...for a CVT". At the end of the day it's still a CVT and I much prefer a regular auto. It just feels better to me. To Mango, for his reasons he thinks it's technically better. For me, CVT's sap the fun out of driving.

^^Yup and they still suck and imo are exacerbated by turbo lag. Forester XT..epic fail for me for this a few other reasons after going in with very high hopes

This is why enthusiasts are scratching their heads. Its a Turbo + CVT = double lag.
Its a tiny turbo - there is no certainty, its a Jello type feeling. Turbo cooling issues specially with 1.5T, complains on going up a grade that its worse than outgoing low trim I4.

Unlike CX5 which many have said that puts a smile on their faces. CR-V is something your wife might force you to buy (mine has taste, she won't) CX-5 is something you will be truly happy driving.
