Hey guys and gals I am currently looking at buying an 95 MX-6 that is currently not running. I am reaching out to those of you who have owned or currently own an mx-6. I do understand that it's pretty impossible to diagnose what's wrong with this car without actually looking at it. However, I wanted to get possible ideas of what could be the issue. Also, if it's an relatively easy fix I would be willing to pick this nice ride up for 600 and have it repaired.

I have not looked at the car in person... but the owns says that it turns over when cranked but it does not fire up. The car was driven to his work and then would not start at the end of his shift. He's not sure what is wrong with the car but he is looking to sell it because he has to move in three months and cant take the car with him.

Here's the numbers:
white 95 mx6 174K
2.5 V6 5sp mtx
power everyting
New thermostat!!

The owner says that the car tries to run hot but if water is added it cools. The thermostat was changed once the car started to run hot but it did not help the situation so I am not sure if it's just leaking fluid and needs a new hose.

I was going to have a mechanic check it out to see if it would be worth repairing?

Looking for possible things that could fix this car.

Thanks everyone in advice!

Will

If its just a simple coolant leak I would pick it up for $600. Do you know how fast it gets hot? And its possible the "new thermostat" is defective.

Sounds like a few things.

The not starting thing sounds like either disty (doubt it since it's a 95) or some other random ignition issue.

The biggest issue would be if it's got a headgasket leak, which would cause running hot as well as not starting if the compression is that bad, but also doubtful if it just happened after he'd driven it.

Go check it out and take a look...mostly likely leaking hose/radiator or the fan switch isn't working (if fluid level is fine), and something up with the ignition. Barring the disty, ignition stuff is cheap enough.

I bought my '93 mx6 for $300 3 years ago and had to do a motorswap, but so worth it.

Sounds like a head gasket if there is not a leak (as mentioned).

The starting problem could be the disty, fouled plugs, lack of compression from the blown head gasket, etc..

mine was a bad head gasket and it was forcing air into the radiator and pushing the water out when it was running and never showed leakes when it was off i just happened to see it oneday looking under the hood while it was at normal op temp
