Headunit Issues?

Okay, first off, this is kind of an odd problem, given the nature of it, but I'll start at the beginning.

I'm working on my friends 1966 Corvair Monza, and am wiring in a custom headunit. It's working just fine, without problem when it does work, but here's my problem. The head unit (A cheap deal from JVC, I think. I don't remember that well) pops up an error from time to time, and will play just fine after a minute, but it seems to have issues on initial startup.

My guess is that it's not getting proper voltage off the bat when the car is turned on, and thusly, I'm not quite sure how to fix it. Again, this is a totally custom setup; The car originally came with no stereo or speakers. I'm thinking maybe I should run a relay, one taking a signal from the ignition, and the other polls connected to the battery and the 12v source to the headunit, so when it gets an ignition switch, it has the whole of the battery to draw from. But I have NO idea if that would help.

Any suggestions would help. =) Thanks guys.

There's a thread in here about turn-on pop from an Amp...Wake suggested to use a cap and I believe a diode to let the turn on signal build up and then hit the stereo. Dunno if that would help... Let me see if I can find the thread.

Read Got Wake's post...that should at least give you an idea.

If I'm understanding what your saying than no, I don't think that solution would work either. If you think it's getting bad power at first, you can check it by probing the power leads on the back of the deck with a DMM while you start the car. If indeed you see voltage fluxuations, than You've found your problem. Alternativly, you could play it with the engine on or off and see if it makes a diff.

Chances are though that the head unit is just weird. (dunno)

Also a good idea...check it with the DMM first and verify if that's the issue.
