Header for the SP20

chipa... i'm thinking about switching over to novated lease too, but haven't been able to figure out if i'll be better off. Do you use ur car for business?

and yeah where u keep your car overnight makes a huge difference in insurance premiums. my friend's premium doubled when he moved from the suburbs to the city.

icould get insurance for $500 too :)
Same story for me, 26yrs old, perfect driving record for 9 years, and aami refused to insure me for any mods, even 17" mags.
strange, i got no probs when i added 17" mags.
i think its really down to pot luck when u ring up to add things.

yeah thats wierd. its probably a just policy that they don't enforce all the time. i've never heard of anyone getting an insurnace claim refused because they didn't tell the insurance company that they had put in a few minor mods like exhaust springs mags and intake. twilight have you heard of any cases like that?

Just got off the phone with aami,

Once again, asked if adding extractors would void my insurance.

Guy proceeded to ask me what other mods I had on.

Told him Exhaust, Mags.

He then advised if I were to add extractors, it would be FINE!but I would

Only limited to those 3 mods only!!nothing else!!!so ARGGGHHHH

What about my lowered springs!!!!!!!!!!!!

i swear, every sales rep has a different take on whats allowed and whats not! did you get the guy's name and number? I wanna give him a call now! :)

backpressure, scavenging and headers

Here's an excellent article that discusses how a header works. Its easy to read and has some interesting analogies. It also addresses the common misconceptions about backpressure, and delves into the rare occasions that you may actually want to have some in your exhaust system (not what u think).

A highly recommended read.

hey coldie, I have been quoted for about $1600 from Hitech mufflers, this includes a cast iron extractor, stainless steel pipes, hiflow catback, and stainless steel muffler. If I pay cash it will cost me $1450 for the whole system.

Thanks for the link, I'll add my name to the list right away!!!

BTW are you going to install the extractor yourself? I'm a bit edgy when it comes to playing around with the engine.

In terms of customs fees this is what I copped for the B&M group buy and also the MSP wheels I recently brought in.

Customs duty - 15% x declared/receipted value of goods
&
GST - 10% x (declared/receipted value + customs duty + postage)

Last time I checked, if the declared value is <$200 (AUD) you won't incur any extra charges. Not sure if that's still the case atm.

And in terms of car insurance - I went with JustCars. $1300 for comprehensive. Covers my springs, wheels, cat back, unichip, stereo. I didn't want the hassles of treading the fine line of what would be insured with NRMA or AAMI so I went straight to JustCars.

Wow thats quite pricey. So I assume thats for the whole exhaust system from the engine back, including a high flow cat converter? Ask them how much it would be if you supply your own (obx) header, that way you get stainless all the way.

Yup I'm planning on installing myself. I've only done a CAI and short shifter so far so I'm pretty new at it too. But if you like, you can come over and we can install the headers together. I'm planning on doing springs soon too so i'll some help with that ;)

Thanks for the info Zed. I'll make sure they declare the value at <$200.
Yeah i agree, the peace of mind knowing that your mods are insured is worth the extra $100-200 premium.

coldie123: The novated lease deal I have is great. All up I pay approx $22k for the car from brand new (Thats if I pay the residual at the end to buy it). about $12k of that is before tax, so it works out even better. And because it is also my work car (hardly any business time tho) my company pays for all rego, insurance and service! Only hassle with it being that I need approval for any mods (which means I have to watch I don't do anything to break the waranty). But the deal is great!

coldie thanks for the info. exhausts and their design have never been my forte, there are always things i can learn...

if you like arden i can get a new quote for you - apparently the gio/suncorp insurance has dropped a fair bit lately outside of qld...

Yeah I'll get another quote where I provide my own header. but otherwise I probably need some assistance in installing the header myself.

If you do need help with stuff, jus giv us a yell...

Andrew, ill shoot you an email.

arden, just a quick estimate - around $1400pa, $450 xs, all mods covered (ie modified exhaust, modified suspension, alloy wheels) - or $1300 with a $650 xs

chipa - thats sounds like a great deal u got going. i use my car for work, but still have to pay for all running costs myself. was just considering novated due to the potential tax benefits. does your company pay for the FBT on the leave or do you pay it?

twilight - no worries, we're all here to learn. btw have you heard of any cases where insurance companies refuse to pay claims because the owner had mods that they didn't tell the ins co. about? even tho the mods had nothing to do with the claim?

sydspeed, sabrelli - i'm in turramurra - a bit far away, but lets meet up and do the install together. and yeah i think i will need some help installing springs (when they eventually arrive) - it looks a bit tricky to do it by yourself from what i've read.

Hey Coldie, Sabrelli... I live in Strathfield area, which is in the middle of Sydney. yeah, sure I would like to install the header together.

coldie - most legal mods (ie dot approved) are ok (things like turbo arent as most ins companies wouldnt insure you and that's the line they'd take), however if you dont tell your ins co about the mod and they get damaged etc (say you have your wheels stolen), they will only replace them with factory items. well that's how suncorp works.
