HDMI vs. Component

hdmi is dvi with audio thrown in, and they are the best in my opinion UNLESS you need to run really long cables in which case component will be stronger

and in answer to your question I would spend the money on a HDMI dvd player if I had an HDMI tv (yes)

even if the dvd player is a 79 dollar samsung that is at fry's?

Such a decision.

get monster componet cables and call it a day, or get DVI for video and thick moster cables for audio, i personally dont like hdmi

I wouldn't waste the money until they sort out the whole blu-ray/hd-dvd battle. If you spent the money right now you'd just be throwing it away.

^agrees

until high def DVD standard is set, only get HDMI if you have another input source where its benefit will be used RIGHT NOW (eg HDTV)

Not true, if you watch alot of dvds and have a good HD tv a good upconverting dvd player can make a great difference. Pictures look clearer more defined.

Anyways, blue ray is gonna win the new dvd race. Why? The amount of PS3 that will be sold will put blue ray in to millions of homes.

The point was simply that if you spend the money on on an HDMI equipped DVD player now, you are just going to have to buy another one in a year if you still want to have the latest and greatest. And yes, it looks like blu-ray will probably win.

I feel both will survive. Some say there isn't enough room in the market for 2 technologies and that it will just end like the VCR/Betamax war did. The market has exploded since those days so I feel the market might be big enough to support the two. Since neither side seems willing to budge and they are both backed by powerhouses of the industry, it seems like we may have both of them on the shelf soon enough. In the end, the people will decide.

So how is blu ray hooked up? Another reason why I'm considering a HDMI player is because I don't have enough Component Video slots... I need to free up as much as I can... and I really don't want to attempt to video switch through my Denon Receiver even though it says its going to up convert the resoultion...

I only have 3 slots of Component Video

Things that use Component
PS2
Cable Box
DVD Player

I would like to hook up my Computer and Xbox.

Ya, I saw two type of HDMI players for 79 (Samsung) and 99 (Toshiba)

Then I started looking into other brands like Denon to match up.

Honestly, unless you have a very large DVD collection that you watch a lot I generally wouldn't bother with an upconverting player, especially with the HD players coming out. As for the HDMI cable, definitely yes. This is becoming the standard connection for HD sources, DVI is on the way out. In addition HDMI will be able to transmit up to 8 channels of audio on the same cable in the future. If you insist on getting an up-converting player you really need to spend at least $200-300 retail for a somewhat decent unit and $600-1000 for very good units.

No no no,

TV = 1HDMI/DVI + 2 Component + bunch of crappy composite svid

HDMI = HTPC (you can play ANYTHING on this)
Component 1 = DVD player
Component 2 = Xbox/Xbox360/PS2/PS3
Svid = other stuff
