this is crazy.
Has anybody else had this happen with their P5?
The paint is bubbling up all down the rear lower seam.
Hopefully get to King's Mazda later today to see what they can/will do about it?

If that's the only place you have rusting consider yourself lucky. Wait until it starts around the badges on the hatch, and on the inside bottom of the doors at the seems (infact if you look it's probably already starting).

guess I don't really consider myself lucky considering how meticulously I have maintained my P5? :(

I am thinking more along the lines of irritated.

My 02 P5 was rusted around the passenger wheelwell and the back edge of the hood. I've never had a car start to rust that quickly!

I readed it in so I wouldn't have to deal with it.

My trunk is rusting at one of the seems, along with both rear wheel wells. I haven't checked my doors but I wouldn't be suprised if they were rusting too.

I had rust at the same seam on the hatch; I have noticed it any place else (well, there's a small, small bubble on the roof though). I'm very much thinking about trading/selling her off though - go back to stock and be done with it - either that or just strip it down and have it repainted with obscene amounts of paint and clearcoat.

D

For the people who are having rusting, is your car parked outside, exposed to sun and rain most of the time, or parked in a garage or at least covered area?

I noticed I had rust forming in that area a couple years ago. I went out a bought some rust check in a spray can, and sprayed inside the holes. It hasn't spread one bit, also had it around the protege5 badge but had both badges removed and holes filled this past spring. Also another spot you may want to check for rust that maybe neglected is up by the windshield wipers under the hood. I noticed bubbling there too.

my car sits in the garage pretty much anytime I am not going back and forth to work (which I have underbuilding parking spot) so it really only sees the outdoors approx 7hrs a week on the road and prolly 2hrs a week getting washed. It's just sh!tty hatch design and the salt they spread in Ohio during the winters. I will need to address it soon. It just sucks. Car isn't that old. My 2001 MPV with +100k miles isnt rusting like this?

It just makes me sad...

My car is garaged and has 40k miles. It has seen 2 winters in Alaksa (they don't salt the roads) and 2 winters in Ohio (they salt the roads so much they are literally white afterwards and when cars drive by they create clouds of it). I blame most of it on the salt, but if it snows I try not to go anywhere for a few days unless I have to.

same problem here...and it's because of the rust that's starting to rear its ugly head that the p5, as much as I love her, is getting sold or traded in before it becomes a serious problem. I've said it before, but I honestly mean it: my 1989 cavalier, which has never seen a day of TLC in its life, has less rust on its underside than my 2002 p5. It's unbelievable how the Michigan winters have torn up my p5...it's kinda sad, actually. I almost wish I had been the owner since the day she was on the lot...with the way I treat this thing, it probably would be in a little better shape.

The difference between my SoCal P5 and my MSP that spent two years in the Detroit area is shocking. No panel rust, but every suspension / undercarriage and under-hood bolt is all rusted to sh*t. Not to mention all the pitted aluminum under the hood. Lots of late nights with the buffing wheel in my future ...

Yeah, let's not talk about the undercarriage or hood. I think rust holds more things together at this point than any fastener...

it always drives me nuts when i see under the hood pics from you guys out in the socal/arizona/nevada areas...it's like the car is brand new!

Northeast: OK - the valve cover is a ringer (but it was from a Northeast junk yard) just look at some of the other bolts ... Lotza polishin' and powdercoatin' coming soon ...

yup, same here I have rust right below my gas door where the rear bumper meets the side door.. My engine takes a beating from all the winter driving I do, and it definitley shows, I'm not even going to talk about my undercarriage.
