Handbrake handle

04' Mazda 3 Sport GT
I hope someone here can help....I bought my mazda 3 sport (used) about a month ago and it seems the previous owners dog chewed up the whole plastic handle of the e brake. Does anyone know how i can remove it? I plan to take it off, sandpaper it, paint and put it back on. Thanks in advance.

I haven't looked, but if I seem to recall feeling some sort of clip/attachment on the underside of the handle. I'd take a look at that.
Also, if you're going to go to the trouble of removing the handle, you might want to look into replacing it with a new (and maybe even stylish) handle.

have you priced out the new ebrake handles, i think the only one i saw was mazda speed acc. and it was 90$$

try seeing if it just unscrews....

In terms of replacing it with another one, the only other "stylish" handle in Mazda dealership is going for aprox $200can (Im in Toronto) and Im not quite sure it would be a wise investment for me today. I don't see any sense in replacing it with another plastic one unless it's going to cost me 20 bucks. It doesn't seem to unscrew either, Ill have to check about that release at the bottom although I didn't catch any last time I looked at it. My only fear now is that it might just be a glued on plastic handle that can't be easily removed by any conventional means....

I had one of my dogs chew a brand new set of Oakleys. I could understand his attraction to my leather checkbook cover, but not the plastic sunglasses.

If you don't want to spend the money for a new one, after you sand it, you might consider covering it. You could wrap it with the stuff they wrap around tennis racquet grips, or you could find an older style leather wrap-on grip for golf clubs. With some standard double-sided grip-tape and a little thought, you could have yourself a killer e-brake. Of course, it would be leather, and even more attractive to your little friend.

That is a great idea Jack. I dont think it would be a problem as he said it was the previous owners dog the ate the plastic.

That's an excellent idea, thanks Jack. Ill definitely be doing that. Although I havent figured out a way to remove it yet, I guess I could do it with the lever raised fully that way giving me more space to work withIll get around to it today see if that works out.

Edit: Yea it shouldn't be a problem now as I don't own a dog...just a couple dozen boas lol

Squeeze the base of the ebrake handle at the top and underside and pull. There are only 2 clips that hold it on.
Another thought is the Momo Ebrake handle and leather Ebrake boot... Search for pics under my user name if you want to see a few pics of that setup....

Damn dude that looks really nice!
there it is, you should do that. It looks great.

Another pic showing the MOMO lettering on the Ebrake handle...Note the new Mazdaspeed Miata Shift Knob...

damn i need that shift nob.... that thing is sweet... where did you get your ebrake boot from tgm3? mine is from redlinegoods and it seems to have a different fit then yours... i didn't realize any one else made one and have been sending people who ask to them.

Thats a MOMO shift boot/Ebrake boot and handle combo. The Ebrake boot slips over the base of the Ebrake handle and covers the set screws... The shift boot was a very easy install and looks quite good. Very high quality leather throughout.....

Yes it is. Yet if you look at it installed in my car it looks like it was specifically designed to fit it....BTW I just realised this is a total threadjack...dam sorry...

not really as he was looking for possibly a cheaper new ebrake handle and this is one... though from what i saw on the web its still a 100$$ handle.

Well I didn't quite get around to it today but I did manage to aquire that tape for golf club handles. I'm going to make this my project for tomorrow night and i'll post pics of what it'll look like in the end.

ps. tgm3, the car in the sig is the exact same one as mine. Except i'm going to put the mazdaspeed rims on sometime in the next week. Hope they fit, they are from a mazdaspeed 6.
