Hand brake......a little floozy????

I usually park my car on a slope and I pull my handbrake up all the way and leave the car in 1st gear.....

With the handbrake all the way down, I noticed that it was very loose from 'no brake position' to about 1/6 the way up! I mean the lever wouldn't even stand up if I pulled the lever up just by 1/6th the total travel.....

Is something wrong? The thought of my handbrake going loose and snapping while making my car go downhill is very worrisome!

I've always had this fear that when I put my phone in that little slot where the Navi controls go, and my hand is going to accidentally knick the e-brake lever up and i'll go into a nasty spin.

Yeah it's very loose. But I doubt it's loose when it's engaged.

I haven't checked on this car yet, but on my last one, there was a tension nut underneath the parking brake handle that you can tighten when the rear brakes start to not bite at a set number of clicks. I'd take the center console off and start poking around. Either that, or one of both of the cable that leads to the rear brakes from the handle are loose.

The little rectangular panel that comes off is for access to the tensioning nut. Of course it's just as easy to take out the cupholders, and it gives you way more space to work.
