GPS Software Change??

Has anyone tried to run another type of GPS software in the car? I have a friend who uses an open source mapping program in his Toyota, it just boots off the sd card like the stock OS. I was wondering if anyone has tried this with another NAV OS? I know Tom Tom is lacking when compared to Garmin, Waze, and especially Google. Anyone tried?

Would be worth playing with if you had another SD card to try it on. Worst case it doesn't work, best case we get better nav options.

I will experiment around some and get back to this thread. If anyone has tried let us know.

My guess is you will have to get deep in the software/firmware design to hack it as TomTom will go to a lot of effort to keep people from updating the maps etc without "buying" it from them.
