Got Rear Ended Yesterday

I was on my way home from work around 4pm. I am in the middle lane of the 3 lane highway. Traffic ahead of me is stopped. So, I stop behind the car in front of me. I was sitting for a good 10-15 seconds at a dead stop. I look in my rear view mirror and see this white blur. Right away I was like oh crap. So I grabbed the wheel and braced myself for impact. The guy must have hit me at 40-45 mph while I was stopped dead. My car got pushed into the car in front of me that was about 8 feet or so ahead of me.

Luckily, I was in my winter beater (97 Dodge Caravan). Man...that thing can take a beating. The bumper is pushed in and cracked. The guy who hit me was in a Chevy Venture minivan. His whole front end was gone. Both lights broken off, his bumper was off. Grill flew past me somehow.

Luckily though, I am ok...just a little sore today in my back and neck.

I wonder how the MSP would have held up to that rear ending? I am so glad hit didn't hit that, or I would have been pretty upset.

that exact thing happened to me two weeks after I got my license.. glad to hear you're ok ryan.

actually I should mention that I destroyed a 97 caravan when I got in my accident.. I'm glad yours held up.. the one I hit looked like a mortar hit the back end.. I broadsided one at 35mph and my 6 cut through it like a tin can

glad your ok, good thing it wasn't the MSP, that's what i was thinking while reading the beginning of your story, until you said it was the caravan.

DAMN....And the whole time I was reading that I thought it was gonna be another totalled MSP...(boom07)

Thanks Sean!

Yeah, that pretty much sucks. I am starting to feel it now that I am sitting at a desk.

Yeah, I wanted to make the story suspenseful (spelling)

did you go to the hospital at all?? I didn't and it was one of my biggest mistakes.. I had two displaced vertebrae and I didn't even know it.

I would be so mad if it was my MSP, I would never get back what I have put into the beast.

No, the state patrol guy asked if I wanted a bambulance, but I said no....I am ok. I told him to put on the report that my head was tingly and that I was shaken up a little bit.

I might get checked out on Sat if I am sore when I wake up.

eh, hopefully its just muscle pain.. if you braced for impact you probably tensed up a bit..

ibuprofen is your friend (2thumbs)

Thanks...and I am glad you asked.

When I asked him what happened, he said I don't know. I asked if he was ok and he said yes, but then said this was trouble cause he had just been in another accident 3 days ago. When the trooper ran his info, the Van he hit me with was still registered to the dealership he bought it from. He was an african american guy....but I think he was new to the country. His english was pretty bad. His name might tell where he is from, but I have no idea (Muwauguzi Nsubuga).

I have no idea how he didn't see me sitting there stopped. He must have been sleeping or talking with his passenger/wife.

oh man that sucks.
just to clarify, i think its safe to say he is just african not african american (from the name)
I see you are in minnesota and i got to guess they are doing the same as here in VT, we have such a white population that we allow a lot of political refugees fom Africa to diversify our population. Its cool though, these people are very thankful for the opportunity and work very hard to fit in and adjust.

I asked about it too cause i sometimes find myself shifting to neutral while im stopped and just release the brake pedal; if you did that and the driver behind you is not paying attention he wouldnt have seen your tail light lit up.
Hope his insurance was up to date, here in VT is illegal to drive without it but i dont know if it is where you are. If he didnt have insurance i doubt he will be able to pay you out of pocket; nevermind any medical expenses.

Oh and i noticed you didnt go to the hospital, which i understand is a major pain in the ass, but god forbid you dont feel well in the next few days the insurance company could stiff you. It is a waste of time to sit and wait at teh emergency post but it is better to cover all the bases; plus if you are short for money for any reason you could milk your neck/back injury.

lol...he seemed pretty new to the country.

The van is an auto, so the brake lights were on :).....I thought about that too, if I was in my MSP.

He insurance was current, I called them last night to start the claim process.

How does the medical coverage work in this situation? If I were to go to the hospital, would they charge my ins or his?

no rolling luggage....

ok, well this is tricky; if you had gone on the ambulance and checked out in the emergency unit, everything would be billed to you (or your insurance) but then calimed to their insurance. Siince we know he was found at fault, there is no argument for the charges.
If you go now, you will be billed (or maybe your insurance) and then you would have to make the claim to his insurance. Now, their insurance can and does have an argument for the validity of the claim; since you werent concerned with your health at the time of the accident. It is a sleazy behavior by SOME ins companies, so i would just be careful. Once they pay for o ne medical bill though, they will pay anything after that. I have friends that have been going to chiropractors for years after the accident, all on the insurance tab.

note, i am not sure about this, but if they bill your insurance company, they may take it in their own hands to bill the other gusy insurance. Depends on your ins company though.

Cool...thanks for the info.

When his ins company calls me back today, I will ask them what the procedure is for me going to get checked out.
