Goodbye CX5

Golfing buddy has a 2005 FX 35 still in mint condition. I can hear him coming when he first turns down my street with his great sounding stock exhaust. No squeaks or rattles with 105,000 miles on her.

Congrats! I've always been a fan of how they look. Good looking replacement. What is the weight for that car?

We got our CX-5 because it reminded us of our old FX35s looks-wise.

A co-worker who has an '08 FX made a similar comment when I got my CX-5... looked like smaller FX. They had a 5.0L V8 (390HP/369 ft-lb) option up until 2014.

~4,300 lbs or so.
And it makes 325 hp? Weight to power ratio is 13.2 which is awesome for this kind of vehicle. While not the only metric to look into, I consider cars with weight to power ratio close to 12 to be really good/fun daily drivers.

Yup. It definitely feels heavier than the CX5, but has a much more "get up and go" feeling to it.

The V8s are certainly sweet, but I believe come with unecessary 4 wheel steering and other expensive novelties. I went thru some of that exotic tech stuff back in the day with my VR4. Now I just want a straight up V6 in a RWD biased setup. Mission accomplished!

The VR4.. there was a dream car of mine back in the 90's...of course even the Starion in my youth seemed pretty cool too. Wow.. IMO: the ship really sailed into nowhere for Mitsubishi Motors after that decade. Maybe the recent Nissan infusion can help right the ship. I hear ya.. long term ownership is not friendly to the high tech options. At least today we have forums, eBay and online bone yards. :-) The adjustable & air suspension on my GX will undoubtedly cause me some bad day in years ahead.

The VR4 is still a very sexy car with admirable performance even by today's standards, if you have a very sexy maintenance budget.

276hp, over 300# of torque at 2500rpm, a very good AWD system.

I think HP was 300 for gen 1, and 320 for gen's 2 & 3. TQ was 305.

The only difference was a small plastic sleeve restricting boost pressure.

I think the 276hp was the "Gentleman's Agreement" rating for Japan. I bet they all made around 300-320 personally. Love those cars. Found a CLEAN '95 with <40k miles on it for $20's and was drooling and thinking. I love retro stuff like that. Seriously.

1/4: 13.5@103
60-0: 113ft
0-60: 4.9 seconds

That's still solid performance!

I think the convertible hardtop VR4 Spyder was one of the most expensive Japanese vehicles back in '96.

Pretty rare though..

" For the 1996 model year, only 84 VR4 Spyders were ever made, and 38 models with this particular color and options combination were created by ASC. The models at the time commanded a $20,000 premium over the already expensive VR4, making it one of the biggest upgrades to an already top-of-the-line car you could order in the ‘90s."
