Getting new TV ... Opinions/Suggestions

OK we are finally buying our new house and will be getting a nice new TV to go along with it.

We have been looking at a few options: DLP, rear projection, plasma ... and arent quite sure which way to go.

We are looking for AT LEAST a 42" screen but things we have been lookin at lately are 50+

Sadly enough we will prob get the TV before the house so just picking up the 60" Sony SXRD isnt an option (love that set) since its big and requires a decent ammt of floor space ... BUT its still an option ;)

which is why we might be leaning towards a plasma since we can put it on a stand, hang it on the wall (can they go above gas fireplaces?)

Ive seen GREAT reviews about a Panasonic (iirc) but its an industrial model that needs cards for inputs?

Whats everyone's suggestions ...

Here are some we have been lookin at:

Having 1080p capability is nice as well :)

Stay away from Plasma. They get really bad screen burn and don't last long. If you really want to mount it to the wall go with LCD, otherwise DLP is your best option.

And ive heard the screen burn isnt a problem when setup correctly and you arent using those extra "brightness" features -- plus dont they have like a 20,000 hr life to em .. thats a LONG time

Id love to be able to wait for the new LED based DLPs come out (around april) .. but the cost will be crazy and the deals on the ones now cant be beat

I also thought that nowadays the burn wasn't as bad as back in the day? also, if I wasn't poor I'd go with the sony sxrd :D

I've got a cousin who works in the electronics department at Sears. I know it's not the place you would go to buy a TV but they do pretty good business and he makes commission. Every Plasma TV he has sold has come back (meaning he doesn't get the commission) so he tries not to sell them unless the buyer insists.

I don't know what Plasmas he's selling, I sell them all the time and don't have them come back unless the set was defective out of the box, about 2-5% of the time. It might be more of an issue that teh people don't like to strech the image out for normal TV and they don't know about it ahead of time. As for burn in it does not happen unless you leave a static image on there for at least 4-5 hours straight on the cheaper units and longer on the better ones. As for screen life both plasma and LCD have a 60,000 hour half life rating.

You might want to stay away from the industrial units as they gerenally have less features than the consumer units. They can look great with the right plug ins and such but it's just easier to get one that is set up for consumer use. But that is personal choice.

1080P is great to have, just remember that at 6 feet back you actually can't tell the different between 1080P and 720P on a dirrect view set.

Hope some of this helped.

I was reading up on something cause I'm new to this stuff. Is this "stretching" converting from 4:3 to 16:9? What is the "just" or "full" mode? I heard it is called something different by some manufactureres and it's a better way to "stretch"? not as noticeable.

i got a 51in rear projection widescreen Aspect (by Hitachi- has same features a Hitachi has) for only 900$ at an after holiday sale at circuit city.

its a great tv. great features and great picture. the sound is great too. would reccomend to anyone who isnt looknig to spend crazy money, the qualtiy is great for such a low price.

Not true anymore. I'd actually recommend plasma before lcd or dlp.

dlp has nice picture, but some can see rainbow effects, and you have to replace bulbs. To me, if you have to replace bulbs, might as well get a front projector/screen setup and get a good 9' screen.

LCD has horrible blacks, and viewing angle sucks on some. Blacks are getting better, but nowhere near Plasma. But, they have a good resolution for the money whereas plasma's get pricey at anything about 1024 res.

Plasma's biggest problem is the power it consumes. But this is also a bunch of bulls*** really but one with more merit.

Honestly, panny panasonic is what I'd get right now. Getting one that is a true 720p is the trick, and getting one that is 1080p...forget it or sell the car.

Me, I'm waiting for more hdtv content and affordable 1080p tv's. By then maybe Toshiba's new SED will be out and cheaper. I just don't get enough widescreen material for a 24/7 widescreen tv yet and I hate stretched images. As for HDTV, forget it. I get about 6 channels that have nothing on them. xbox 360 is the only reason for me to get one, and I dont have that yet either :(

We have all panasonic plasmas. They do burn eventually, but it has been on 24/7 on the same channel for 2 years. It got burned in within a month. Surprisingly it hasn't burned up from the heat. It's mounted in an unvented wall display. The other ones we have are fine and have had no problems at all.

I like my old tube HD monitor (panasonic DT-M3050W), the nice thing about tubes is that when you aren't feeding an HD signal into it, it still looks good. Very forgiving. DLP is similar in that respect...

I hate when people just jump in and hate on one specific thing because of a friend or something they have heard

Plasma is great if you get a good brand, and soemthing reliable (Panasonic comes to mind).

8th gen panasonics do not brun in. If a pixel is the same for a period of time the screen shifts by 1 pixel. You dont even notice it.

They are guaranteed to last 10k hours of run time. That is good enough until the next new thing is out. 10k hours is a long time.

I am not "all plasma, nothing else" blah blah.... just trying to put facts out there that someone might overlook after reading some of these posts. Plasma costs a good deal more for HD, where LCD can stand that resultion without a problem. LCD is not as large as plasma quite yet... at least for the $$.
DLP is ok... dont have tons of comments on that one.
I have yet to see a picture as vivid and 'robust' as my HD panny plasma. I am sure those high end plasmas and the new sony technology is better, but realisticly... I cannot imagine anything looking this good.

Our setup was just over $2,000 for a 42" HD, and it is hanging on the wall. It is awesome to display music vids at partys, watch discovery HD, watch anything HD. Blows everyone out of the water when they come over. The colors of the panny are soooo vivid!

Good luck in your search, from the sound of it.... you will be happy with whaterver you get.
