Black Mica MSP #932
I have been running the MSP on 93 octaine since i got the car in January. Gas prices are going up and i was wondering if we had to run it on 93 or if it will run on 89. Has anyone tried this or give me some advice?

you need premium.

its only 10 cents more that 89 anyways (at lleast here)...so on a fill up thats only $1.45 more...not much of a savings...

anything less then 91 octane is no longer premium.
Don't you guy's have 91 octane in Philadelphia?
that's all you need.

You can run 87 octane, it should be fine. But the manual requires premiun and suggest that you should. Even the gas door says 'only use premiun gas' but i'm sure like a lot of premiun gazeler's can use regular.

Try it, there's no harm. As long as you don't hear anything 'pinging' from the engine it should be fine.

there are a whole lot of people that want to fill up with regular gas, wait 5,000 miles between oil changes... whats is up with that. you bought a car that needs special attention. and sure the msp prolly can run on 89, and it is prolly fine to wait 5,000 miles in between oil changes... but why risk it. an oil change is what, like $20 every three months or so, and gas is like $18 to fill the tank every two weeks. i mean come on...

Gas is one of the few things that you should not divert from what the manual says. Gas and oil are the two most important factors in how well and how long your car will run.

Of corse the car will run on 87 and 89 but you will not be saving much by doing that and after a while you will begin to notice knocking and pinging from the motor.

And besides what Dexter said how much are you saving at the pump... Is it worth it??

I wish i only had to get gas every two weeks. I don't know about the rest of you but i have to fill up every 5 days and its $20 every time. Driving conditions are different i guess. I get about 20 miles per gallon around here.

You guys should be happy with only having to fill up every 5 days, or two weeks like someone else said...I have to drive my car for work, and I fill up just about every 2 days, 3 if I'm lucky. In Northern Cali, I'm paying about $2.11 for 91 octane right now(91 is the best we have). I haven't let it get much past 1/4 tank and it costs me almost $25.00. **Just a side note...I've had my MSP for 5 weeks, and I've already put 3,600 miles on it...is this car gonna last??

wow that is alot of driving!!!! I put 93 octane in and that is at $1.85 here in Philly right now. I only have 1900 miles on my car and i got it on Jan. 17

its about $1.99 for 93 octane here.

its ****** bulls***, that gas prices have gone up all over the place again. whats it gonna be in the summer, $2.75 a gallon??

i know around my way that by June, 87 octane will be over a dollar so that will make 93 around $1.25. At least that is what they are saying now.

Well, in the 5 weeks I've had my MSP, gas prices have gone up a good 30 cents a gallon. It's horrible...I never worried about gas prices, but then again, i never had to use 91 octane either...

93 Octane - always

Either Exxon or Amoco - occassionally Texaco, but nothing less. It is currently around $1.85 per gallon; but regardless how much it is, I will always use 93 Octane.

I haven't strayed from the 93 octane but for some reason I doubt that a four cylinder engine (turbo or not) would suffer from not having it, short and long term. But since I've got a full service station near me that's only charging $1.67 for premium, I'll stick with it. Hell, I've got a roommate driving an '02 Explorer V8 who uses regular. He's got 30k miles and no knocking/pinging or any other ill effects...however I've told him a million times he should be using premium.

No he shouldnt... unless that is what the manual states...

Damn this car is cool running on 93? There is a place by me that you can get 105 octane at the pump, but that s*** will prob blow up the engine if you dont mix it with a lower octane
