gas

Just the recommended. 91 is a waste. (Here we go again....)

Unless you are getting knock. Higher octane won't get you better perfomance unless you were getting knock before uping the octane. YOu should stay at the recommended uless doing some type of Forced Induction (turbo, nitrous).

the ONLY thing that will happen by you using the higher octane gas is you will notice your wallet getting lighter faster...or your pocket getting emptier faster...whereever it is you keep your money....

Wait a minute, Sir Nuke, are you saying that all this time I have been wasting my money on the "mid-grage" gas? I feel as If I'm disrespecting my Mp3 if I put anything less..........Lord knows with the gas prices here in upstate NY I could use a price break, but I dont want to put junk gas in my car either - Just to make sure: Premium Gas only for the Mp3 right? 89 OCTANE??

THANX!

Stick to what the owners manual recommends... It's a waste to pay the extra for premium gas. Sure, burning premium does increase your gas mileage and burns more completly(more horsepower) but those gains are insignificant and would never be realized.

If you have the MP3, go with what is recommended on the gas cap cover, which is 91 + due to the advanced timing. If you go below that to let's say 87 octane, then your computer will retard the timing, and you will have only 130 HP like regular Proteges instead of the 140 HP.

OK, where I live 86-87 octane is regular, 89 is mid-grade, and 91-93 is premium...

Use whatever gas your owner manuals says.

Yep. Octane does not boost power, it just prevents knock. Octane actually makes the fuel LESS flammable by raising the ignition point. Knock comes from high compression, which "squeezes" the air/fuel mix, producing enough heat for the mix to combust prematurely (insert another B&B joke, Pat), causing the "knock" that we hear.

It's how diesel engines actually work. The compression is what ignites the fuel, diesels have no spark plugs or ignition source. The MP3, because of its advanced timing, runs the risk of knock. It ignites more towards TDC, which means more of the power is transferred to the downstroke. This means that the chamber reaches slightly higher compression, which is where the risk of knock comes from.

Interestingly, two different grades are recommended in the 2002p5 manual. One suggests 87 (which is fine), and yet at one point 89 is listed. I'll have to find it and put in the page #s so we can all get a laugh.

Octane does increase power! It's been proven and many magazine articles are focused on it! However, the gains they boost are insignificant. For instance, on a V8 mustang, a increase of around 5-6 peak HP was noted. But, who can feel a 5HP gain when you already have 285+HP on tap? The theory behind it is that a high octane gains burns more completely and in-turn, creates more force against the piston.

...

Blown is very right. By making the gas harder to burn(aka higher octane) ,when it does burn, it burns more evenly and more completely. By doing so it creates more of a force on the down-ward stroke (power stroke) of the piston therefore creating more power as stated above by blown.
Peace,
Zane

Yep, you are right blown (and yello). The burn is more complete! And as noted by yello, the even burn creates an similarly even expansion. Sorry, I forgot that tidbit. for most of us, we dont feel the power, just a better rev.

Thanks for adding that:D

Actually when one advances timing they are setting the ignition to "set off" sooner which is actually farther from TDC.
I.E.- you advance timing from 14 degrees BTDC to 16 degrees BTDC (before top dead center) your flame front starts propagating even sooner before the piston finishes its compression stroke.

ok so should i use the 87 from chevron, shell, arco, which one...are they really that different as the prices state

How can i (*if* i wanted to) advance the timing and use the hi-octane champagne?

Easy on a small block. I don't see how on this one tho'
