Yep. Octane does not boost power, it just prevents knock. Octane actually makes the fuel LESS flammable by raising the ignition point. Knock comes from high compression, which "squeezes" the air/fuel mix, producing enough heat for the mix to combust prematurely (insert another B&B joke, Pat), causing the "knock" that we hear.
It's how diesel engines actually work. The compression is what ignites the fuel, diesels have no spark plugs or ignition source. The MP3, because of its advanced timing, runs the risk of knock. It ignites more towards TDC, which means more of the power is transferred to the downstroke. This means that the chamber reaches slightly higher compression, which is where the risk of knock comes from.
Interestingly, two different grades are recommended in the 2002p5 manual. One suggests 87 (which is fine), and yet at one point 89 is listed. I'll have to find it and put in the page #s so we can all get a laugh.
