Gas Lid Locking Pin CX-5 2017

:
CX-5
I've noticed that pin doesn't work properly anymore. Doesn't hold the lid. Is it possible to maybe lubricate that pin somehow to make it work again or just easier to replace it? What is the correct part number? I assume it fits almost all modern CX-5?

I guess it will be easy to replace it by removing the nut?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried pushing it in to get it to move freely. Also, there's a product known as WD-40.

Yes, when I push it in it is either stuck or slowly getting out. That's why I'm asking if it anyone got the same issue what is a better option to replace or trying to lubricate not sure about the whole mechanism. Maybe there is a broken spring or something?

P.s. WD-40 doesn't lubricate it is getting rust out which will increase friction between materials. There are special lubricants which work the purpose.

The WD-40 suggestion was for its ability to penetrate and free things up. Agree it's a lousy lubricant, proper lube comes afterward.

There was/is a shop manual available for download on this site or perhaps some member can point you to it or send it. It's a 2013 dated manual,( though there may be a newer edition) and under the "body" section it shows the cable routing as well as the release mechanism by the driver's seat and at the cable end latch which is accessed by a panel inside. Both mechanisms show a spring.

Just curious, where did you get the picture you posted. It's shown in the shop manual along with the cable routing and latches.

Finally, to answer your question, no, I personally have never had this problem and it's the first I've seen it mentioned on this forum. Perhaps others could chime in here with their experience.

I just started having this issue on my 2017 CX-5 in the last six months or so. It’s worse when it’s cold. I tried using some graphite powder to lubricate because I wasn’t sure if other lubricants might eat away at the plastic. It seemed to help right after I did it, but it didn’t last very long.

The only time I had this problem on my 2018 CX-9 was after I had washed the car. My area got hit with a surprise temp drop shortly after I finished, and a bit of water froze around the pin. It was very slow to retract.

It sounds like it still extends on it's own, so it may just need some lubrication. Use a bit of gun oil as @dunhillmc suggested. 3-in-one oil works too (that's what I used). Really any silicone lubricant should work.

Thanks everyone! This is the first winter when I've noticed the issue and it is related to the low temperatures most likely. However no water in that area.
I lubricated it and it seems okay for now. Will see how it goes.

Good. Looks like you made some progress. If you haven't already, might want to "exercise" it a bunch of times to work the lube in and add more if needed.
