Garmin/Tom Tom Setup

:
10 MS3
The Black Friday deals for the Garmin/Tom Tom GPS sound good to me. I'm debating whether I should get one. Pros/Cons? Let's see your setups!

I've had my Garmin for three years and it's been great. I use the non-skid mount on the dash instead of the glass suction cup. Only thing is the non-skid mount cost close to $30. The glass suction cup kept falling off when it was hot.

Do you have a pic of it mounted by any chance?

It's technically called a Friction Mount - grips super well. Doens't ever move during normal driving. I don't imagine it moving during hard acceleration or hard breaking either, but haven't tested that :)

Here's a pic of it I got off the Internet:

Here's my Garmin 750. I have a similar mount in my Ram, attached to the windshield. My wife's 300C has a friction mount (her Garmin is a 760)

Bought my wife and my daughter the $89 TOMTOM from walmart this morning. Will wrap them up and will be the first presents under the tree this season.

TomTom One

We have the TomTom and have been pleased. We've had no trouble with the suction cup falling off the windshield, I think the secret is to use ... SPIT! Make sure the glass is reasonably clean, and lick it! Really! My wife found that the hang on the window doohickies fell off unless spit was used. Don't know why....

I have been using a Garmin Nvi 765T since March. The core navigation features are very good.

The Bluetooth hands-free calling is... inadequate. Everyone I talked to complained of having a hard time hearing me. (Windows up, radio off, mic on my collar/seatbelt/steering column)

The FM transmitter is basically useless. This may be due to living in a metro area (Tampa), but our FM band does have some availability, and the Garmin never seemed to get thru. I just use the aux out on the Garmin to the MS3's aux input.

I don't like having obstrucitons above the dash, so windshield mount was never an option for me. I also didn't want to drill holes in the dash. At first, I stuck the Garmin mounting disc over the passenger air bag warning icon to the left of the shifter. but as I feared, it was a real tight squeeze to shift into first without punching the Nvi with my knuckles.

So I went with a seat bracket mount from MountGuys dot com. It's basically an 18" chunk of 1/2" flexible steel electrical conduit, painted black. It bolts to the passenger's seat rail, right next to the center stack, and has a recevier ball for the Nvi's powered quick-release adapter. It sticks up next to the center console on the passenger's side. Does not interfere with the passenger's comfort- very easy to avoid.

I'll see about snapping a couple of pics in the morning.

***If you buy a Garmin, DO NOT GET THE MSN DIRECT OPTION. MSN Direct is going bye-bye on 1/1/12.

I have a TomTom One S. Basic, no-frills (3.5" screen, no b00t00f, no FM transmitter), but it does a bang-up job reading street names aloud and has a streamlined mount that folds onto the device when not in use. Used it during a trip to Vancouver, and it only got confused when I was downtown and among tall skyscrapers.

I have the TomTom XL330-S (text to speech) I got the cool "Zoom-Zoom" logo's that show up when I turn it off and on, got a theme to match my 6's dash lights at night too. It's I just use the stock suction cup mount. I really like it, but the key is to keep it up-to-date.
