Hey all,

I was just wondering, why is it that a lot of people prefer RWD? What are the benefits of RWD cars compared to FWD?

Thanks

No torque steer is one huge benefit. You have more control over the car in corners, even if you kick the tail out etc etc. There are countless links all over the internet. You'll have plenty of reading material if you look in the right places.

A week ago we had a small snow storm and on the freeway I saw an RX-8 who had lost the rear and hit a cement wall (it was an easy sweeper).... I felt sorry for the person

At low speeds you really can't notice a difference. At higher speeds and doing more aggressive driving, FWD cars tend to understeer which is safer for novice drivers while RWD cars tend to oversteer which can get you around corners faster or send you carreening out of control if you don't know what you're doing. Most enthusiast cars are RWD for their high speed handingling benefits and driving characteristics.

Just watch this snippet from 5th gear. It will explain it all:

whoa... um.. hrm.. You might want to try creating a thread in the MSP section of the boards rather than posting in an Off Topic thread that has nothing to do with BOV's. You may get better results that way.

that shows the difference quite well, but I'd like to see the comparison on less than perfect road conditions...ice, snow, rain...

simple, just take what you saw in the video, and exaggerate every car behavior when under slippery conditions... note that ICE will ruin traction for ANY drivetrain w/o any studded tires

never knew any of that. I always thought FWD or AWD was the way to go. The last clip where she runs over the penguin made an impression on me. I always thought, well FWD will pull the car better since the front has the traction and the car will go where the wheels point. I guess thats not the case. I'll have to compare my pro to my girlfriends mustang. Hey so is the fact that DSC was on in the mustang what makes it not to good when trying to drift it? I went to an empty parking lot with her car a few months ago but I couldnt get it to drift. I'll have to try turning it off and trying it again. :)

Ok Thanks Yeah Im New To This So Im Trying To Find Out...

Its all good that you trying to find out, but learn to respect threads. You aint gonna see others here asking questions on your thread about something that is completely irrelevant to your original post.

I hate to say this, but until you know about cars I wouldn't try to drift anything. That just don't sound right.

As far as which is better, it depends on the car and how is driving it. Me personally, I would rather have a rwd car. I've driving in every kind of weather condition you could think of and never wrecked because the weather was bad.

don't forget about Mid Engine Rear Wheel Drive!

Having owned all of the above, FWD, RWD, AWD and M-RWD, they all have their advantages and disadvantages. It's generally a personal preference really. If you don't race (road race, auto-cross) then there's not really that much of a difference, unless you push your car alot on the street.

gotta love M-RWD setup, wish toyota kept making the MR2, the SW20 version! not the ghey spyder version lol
