Fuel tank sending unit question

My fuel gauge has stopped working properly. I found this out the hard way when the car dies suddenly when running out of gas. This was the first tank of gas I put through it since owning it so I was not able to accurately tell how many miles were traveled on the tank of gas that was in the car. The gauge was stuck at 1/2. I filled up with 18 gallons of gas after the car died. The gauge currently still shows nearly full after 100+ miles.

I am assuming I need a new sending unit. Mazda parts explained to me that there are two sending units in the tank.

Why is there both a tank gauge and a fuel gauge sending unit? I am assuming I need a fuel gauge sending unit but I want to make sure before spending the money.

I've got the same issue and am also thinking sending unit.

Did you sort out your problem? Was it one of the sending units?
