Fuel smell 2016 GT CX-5

Does anyone ever notice an intermittent fuel smell around their CX-5? I noticed it a couple times last week as the vehicle was warming up. I was standing near the vehicle when I first noticed. The other day after about a 5 minute drive I noticed a fuel smell inside the vehicle.

I did bring the CX-5 into Mazda today for the intermittent fuel smell issue but they did not find anything nor did the fuel smell show at that time. The recent recall was taken care of. They said to keep looking for the concern I raised and bring back in if needed.

Thoughts?

On my 2014 GT it also smells strongly of fuel during initial warm up. Like Unobtanium said, I just think it burns very rich during warm up to help warm up the engine faster. I guess it is the skyactiv technology.

During warm up it sounds like the CX5 is running rough too. Just 3 days ago I brought mine in for inspection and the mechanic told me he thought I had an exhaust leak! I had to explain and then turn the cx5 on for him and said wait a minute or 2 and it will stop sounding rough. When it stopped sounding rough after 1-2 min, he realized it has to do with the skyactiv technology trying to warm up the engine as quickly as possible.

It's rich to achieve light-off with the cats ASAP to meet emissions.

Guess the question is did this happen before the recall?

If not, they might have an issue to fix related to the recall fix.

Like I said...recalls scare me for this reason. Unintended consequences. Most of the things I nerd out about shoot bullets, and I've seen people (and done it myself) modify something, only to discover that it had unintended issues in another area. An example would be the SCAR17 eating optics like candy. Or the moving of the gas port of the M16 closer to the chamber (M4) causing more stress on bolt lugs resulting in less bolt life.

Not related to recall, they all do it, the colder it is the longer it takes to get the cat hot to reduce emissions.

Yeah and cold, still air can keep fumes around

Just run 91 or 93 octane and it will smell better than 87 octane ;)

All joking aside, 91 or 93 octane smells better coming out the exhaust than 87 octane. In race cars the 100+ octane smells even better.

Not that I purposely sniff car exhausts (naughty)

I never thought of that, but can you imagine how many independent shops will buffalo many uniformed consumers!

I once had a guy tell me the coolant light was on and offer to add some in. It was just the cold engine light...

The shortest answer to give people who ask about this is that it's part of the emissions control. It runs rich at first to heat up the catalytic converter, then settles into a normal mode.
