Fuel Consumption

CX7T, 1,200 miles on vehicle , Suburban stop&go with some 1 mile runs, AC on 90% fuel mileage was 21.69 mpg. First checked at ~ 700 miles and was 21.24 so I don't expect any increase from this mileage on. Citgo 91 octane. Ed

Bob421. My AT usually shifts at under 2,500rpm. I seldom go over 2500 unless I'm having some fun merging onto a expressway and then it's shifting at 4-5,000 rpm. I got over 20 mpg at ~ 700 miles so yours may go up but, not much unless you change driving habits or something is wrong with the car. The AT is the adaptive kind so it will move shift points and to a lessor extent fuel mapping. Try to take off smooth and steady so the AT shifts at or below 2500 rpm. It will take a full tank of fuel for the AT to adjust to your driving style. Post back and let us know what happens. Ed

Congrats on getting 21mpg doing mostly city driving. Actually, I have no earthly idea how that is even close to possible in this vehicle but that's great if your car is getting that. After reading many posts on average mpg, it seems that you are a rare exception and not even close to the rule. In fact, I don't remember reading of one other person getting 21+ mpg with city driving.

Personally, I get about 14.5mpg with city driving and I can't really complain too much about it since I absolutely love this vehicle. And no, I don't think anything is wrong with the guy's CX-7 who is only getting 12.5 mpg. I have seen numerous posts about people getting between 13-15mpg city and there is absolutely nothing wrong with their vehicles.

On another note, why would you buy this turbocharged vehicle if you shift below 2500rpm the majority of time, except for the occasions when you are merging onto the freeway and then you shift at 4 or 5k rpm? Nothing personal, but I would gladly trade the 6mpg loss that I am getting to be able to drive the way I drive in comparison to the way you drive.

I didn't buy this car to get 21mpg city. I would have bought a Civic if I wanted that kind of gas mileage.

I average about 19-20mpg every fill up. That is with about 50/50 city/highway, AC about 75% of the time and my heavy right foot.

That said, the first few tank fulls were MUCH worse than that. Gas consumption got better with each fill until about 3,000 miles.

Seems like a wide range of mpg figures for CX7 drivers. I'm getting ~21 and some getting 14 and others report 24 mpg. I did not buy my car for great mileage but, I'm sure I like my 21 rather than 12. I enjoy my car very much and I drive it the way I like, which is not trying to lead the pack from every stop light.

I average about 17.5 mpg as of late, city driving... a/c on 100% of the time, and some what of a lead foot.

The gas mileage really hasn't been that bad ever since I started beating the crap out of it more often.

I find most cars get worse gas mileage when you take off really slow from a stop... it's like they're more efficient when they're getting up to speed at a decent pace.

I drive with a very heavy foot and really don't pay too much attention to my gas consumption but I've averaged about 17mpg for my fillups with the A/C on 90% of the time

Replay - The Bartender & the Gas Guzzler

Since this is an issue that will not go away, here is a post I made with some thoughts on another thread discussing this issue back in January. Its just some thoughts I had on the disparity CX-7 owners are experiencing in fuel efficiency. (I did update a few of the numbers to reflect current data.)

Seeing that this is an issue that won't seem to go away, I am beginning to think that the reason for most of the 12 mpg experiences comes down to the individual driver. The current EPA ratings, and misleading marketing have have certainly contributed to the frustration, but I can only conclude that the performance characteristics of the 4 cylinder DISI turbo engine must be to blame.

There is no question, that when called upon to produce power, IT DELIVERS !!!

But does it do so with a reckless abandon of sorts?

I am 47 years old, and I have never gotten less than 17 mpg in the 6000 miles logged on my AWD GT; I average about 18.5 mpg. Last week however, my wife & I were moving some of my office stuff, and we had the CX loaded down with more than I imagined we would be able to fit; it was at least an additional 500 to 600 pounds. To my delight, the CX-7 did not seem to loose an ounce of spunk! To my chagrin, the gas guage appeared to be in free fall.

Imagine for moment, that you have two big bottles of Jack Daniels, two shot glasses, and a bucket. Take one bottle of JD, open it, and pour a shot of the bourbon into one of the shot glasses. That is easy.

Take the other bottle of JD, and empty it into the bucket. Now pour a shot of bourbon into the other shot glass from the bucket... do you think you may have spilled a little bourbon? (And this assumes you did not consume any of the bourbon first!)

Take it a step further. Imagine you now need to fill a bucket with bourbon as fast as possible. Would it be quicker to fill the bucket from a bottle of bourbon, or fill the bucket from another bucket?

At my age, I KNOW I have become a much more conservative driver than I was 20 or even 10 years ago. There is no avoiding it - it just happens. I think the engine is capable of delivering bourbon by the bucket, and most of the time, all any of us want is a shot.

Please forgive my analogy, but at my age, I'm more concerned with spilling a drop of 18 year old scotch, than I am about burning a little extra gasoline. Its much more expensive!

Any thoughts...?

Glad to hear that..I've got 500 miles on my new 07 and I'm averaging about 18-19 mpg.

50/50 city/hiway ac 90% of the time.

This is pretty terrible gas mileage for a 4 banger...

Good news is little to no turbo lag -- must have the new software.

Bah...Citgo...use Shell or BP or Mobile or Chevron...Citgo goes strait to Chavez's pocket!

But...good mileage with such low mileage. You might even see a slight improvement...my wife can eek out 24mpg on the highway. I on the other hand...can eek out 19mpg!! LOL!!

My wife has been consistently pulling 27-28mpg on the highway for her commute and I managed to pull 29mpg on our 4k mi road trip with the cruise set at 80mph in Colorado. Other tanks on the trip ranged from a low of 22 going over the Rocky Mountains to the average of 26-28mpg.

Please note that I also have 22k mi on my CX currently so that probably helps.

Oh and yes the AC was on. :p
