I removed the huge plastic part of our intake that fits right behind the grill and I think it may work just as well as any cai. I have a lot better throttle response and it sounds a lot better. The best part is, IT'S FREE! Two bolts and 2 minutes and you're all done. Let me know what you think. Try it, what's it gonna cost you!

yup removing the stock silencer does help...but i wouldn't go as far as saying it's just as good as a CAI...but it definitely does help and makes your car sound a lot better...

happy driving...

no pics, but it's that huge plastic piece attached to your air box.

no, no, no! it's at the very front of the hood, right on top of the grill. It's about 2 1/2 feet wide and takes air into the air box. Just remove the two bolts holding in on.

I've been trying to decide if I was going to do this to my car, I think I will try it now. :)

I had an old 94' Probe GT that I did a similar mod to this one on, and it helped a good bit as well. I used a K&N drop in and some ABS 3in plastic hose to run from the hole on the front of the intake box down to the splash guard.. On the splash guard I mounted a filed down 2in X 3in scoop (for clothes dryer's vents on houses) to funnel air into the tube. Worked like a charm...

Good job on the cheap mod!!! ;)

i tried it and didnt like it. it may have been a bit better at higher rpms, but it seemed like i lost a decent amount of bottom end. i wish someone would try this at the dyno to see if it really works or not.

the amount of hot air that will circulate to the intake track diminishes any gains the fan is blowing hot air into the box inlet
yes it sounds good but thats it.
reroute it to the fresh air outside and now your talking!:D

lol, if you really want to be ghetto you can remove the stock filter and strech pantyhose across the airbox. you get better sound offa that and my friend swears it works well

I did this pretty much when I first got my car, and all it really dose is make the car louder. I'm not sure if you noticed, but the opening for that silencer is at the VERY front of the car. I read a pretty good write up this guy with a BMW 3.18ti did a while back where his car had a simmilar silencer to ours, and he measured the tempatures of the diffrent under hood areas, and towards the front, even though it's right over the radiator, was cooler while moveing. At idle like at a stop light it was hot, but hey, if your raceing around all the time you never stop.
I think a better mod would be to seal up the drainage holes that on on the silencer, and then remove that little black plastic tray that is right by the hood latch. This would allow air to go from the upper grill, right into that silencer and ALSO over the exaust manifold, wich would be good for cooling the engine bay in in general.

Just opionins.... :D I'm selling mine soon so I figure my good idea's shouldn't go to waste.

Silencer Removal

Anyone know where this on a Protge DX?

I did the removal of this airbox on my Saturn and it was kind of fun. Not much of a noise but enough to notice it seems..

Is there any chance of getting water into the intake from taking the silencer off?

I think the only reason they put those stupid Silencer's on is for old people because they don't want a loud car LOL

P.S. This is only a temp fix as She is going to get an intake here soon.. I can't believe these are going for like $40.00 on Ebay.. LOL..

Any suggestions?

I did the same thing but added a $20 cone filter from ebay or just about any parts store. Take a gander....

Here's a closer pic. I had to drill a hole in the plastic adapter that attached to the MAF sesnor so I could place in the Air Temp sessor. The sound is louder and top end pick up is better but bottom end is alittle sluggish. But I did this soon after I got the car so there may no have been a bottom end diff. I just replaced it with a new one yesterday...the old was in there for about a year and was falling apart.

Intake

Hey man Cool Ride.. I like your idea of the intake that isn't a bad idea at all, and very inexpensive.. I like the sway bar too.. :-) Mazda does an awesome job on making there car very (Whats the word Im looking for) tight on the road.. :). I can only imagine what that swap bar or springs could do.

Heres a question for you guys.. Im actually writing on the behalf of my fiancee.. Shes looking at doing things to your car.. When I popped the hood I noticed the engine is already getting dirty :wtf: .. My Question is.. Other than by hand is there an easy way to clean this thing?

Also.. can someone give me some links for head light modifications.. Her Headlights are very dim when she drives at night and I was looking at taking it up to Hyper whites or something.. But I hate those stupid Orange Turn Signals in the headlight.. :bs: BLAH! :) hah

Any advice?

for your engine, i think the best solution is to take an appointment with ur mazda dearlership and tell them u want to clean the engine. :D

as for the headlights... my friend tried some fake xenon you buy for 30$ and he told me they just brake weeks after weeks..
if someone has a solution for the bulbs please help me out

peace

Really why is it not good for the engine ??
A lot more crap gets into it. That's why all cars never come with just an open intake sitting out like the ones we buy.

A better option would be to leave the stock air intake plumbing which is tuned to increase low to mid range torque, and drill several holes in the top part of the grill in front of the stock air intake opening so it can get colder air. I did this on my car after trying some of the things you mentioned. I ran a 2 1/2" flexible tube from the opening at the bottom of the filter housing to the opening in the fender well that most CAI's go through. Definite improvement in the upper rpm range, but killed the bottom end. In the pic I tried to outline the area I'm talking about. Sorry the pic is crude, and no that isn't my car.
