For those of you considering upgrading Pulleys...

have we even figured out if our motors are interanlly or externally balanced. i was told 95% of newer four bangers are internally balanced and don't have to remove the harmonic balancer when you at a UDP.

Our engines are internally balanced and do not have a harmonic balancer on the drive pulley. People always jump the gun rather then making rational decisions they only read and understand what they want to get out of the articles.

Have mazda put that in writing. I love the UDP idea, but I'm worried as well.

so since we have the harmonic ballancer inside the motor we can run UDP's no problem. didnt we figure that out the first time UDP were brought up months ago. just wondering. im going to get one when i can afford it. if the harmonic balancer was out side the motor we would have two pieces on the crank. the pulley and the balancer behind it. right.

This was already talked about a few months ago. We already came to the conclusion that it was internaly balanced. I have my sources and I do believe what they tell me. It's your choice to take the info I get and do whatever you want with it. Regardless of what you do to your car someone will always critisize it and have 10 million reasons you shouldn't do it.

Just for fun, anyone ever look into the bad effects of a K&N or a CAI or even bigger rims or tires. I am sure you can find some articles out there with some old school dad disagrees with us young generation with this free flowing filters or CAI.

Everything has it's ups and down sides. You want more HP that usually means you will have to sacrifice something. Either driveability, fuel economy something anwyays... it's your choice in the end to use it, no one is shoving the UDP down any ones throats... to some turbo'ing your car is bad.. and to others it's god himself under your hood... If you do it right... everything works...

Do it right and nothing will happen.

I have the UDP on my truck, and they made a noticeable difference at install... I know comparing a domestic V8 and a Mazda 4cyl. is apples and oranges, but still...

It helped some, and was relatively cheap, but it did have a one strange downfall. I guess since it turned the alternator slower, my lights would dim when slowing down. I just bought a heavy duty alternator and solved that.

On the other hand, I have had the Chevy factory water pump for 133,000 miles (since 1989). 70,000 of those miles the pullies were installed. I think it actually helps to make the accessories last longer. Anyways, I would be interested to see how they helped the protege.

Thanks for all the research you guys have been doing looking into this stuff!!!

Was there just one UDP or did you get the whole pulley kit?

There were 3 pullies in mine...sorry. I think that is the only way they sold them for my truck. They were made by BBK. It was a long time ago, but I think BBK still makes them. They are on the crankshaft, water pump and alternator.
