My first trip since the pandemic was to Tampa Fl and return. 375 miles, 70 mph with cruise, averaged 31.7 mpg and average speed was 54 mph. The engine is now much smoother at idle now. Ed

That explains. The best MPG I can do on my 2016 CX-5 AWD is 28.5 if I drive under speed limit, 75 mph or slower, on the highway.

My 2016 GT AWD gets best mileage at 60~65 MPH I’ll get 31~33 mpg. Found 63 mph is it’s sweep spot..

I was on cruise control at 70 mph in the left lane 80% of the time and being passed regularly by vehicles doing ~ 80. i75 in Fl. is not good to be going much below 70. Ed

I would expect that an AWD vehicle would achieve 30-31mpg with cruise control on 70, relative flat road and not passing others at 80 or so once in a while. Cruise on or a very steady foot is the key. Ed
