First oil change (2024 CX-5 Akera)

:
2024 CX5 Akera G25
Question is - wait the full 15,000km for the first oil change, or change oil at half way eg 7,500kms

The Mazda app says as follows, but I cant see the same information in the owners manual:

“YOUR FIRST FULL SERVICE AND OIL CHANGE

Oil-Can

“The original oil in your new CX-5 is specially
blended to optimise engine run-in and ensure long-term performance. Mazda recommends this first fill is replaced with oil that meets Mazda specifications after 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first,
to ensure maximum longevity.”

Im struggling to believe the “special blend” that is not only a break-in oil but also lasts the full 15,000km oil change interval….

This ain’t the old days where the break-in oil was changed after a short distance and the proper long term spec stuff used from then on!

My gut and the video linked below re oils and running in modern engines from a real expert both point me toward an earlier oil change having some real benefits.

What say ye?

I changed the oil at 3K mikes like I’ve done on my past vehicles, then 5K-ish there after. It gets the early shavings out of the engine as the parts seat in. Maybe a myth, but oil’s cheap vs. peace of mind. I feel like I don’t get my monies worth out of a vehicle unless I get at least 220K out of it. Like the saying goes, your mileage may vary.

Changed my 2016 at 3,600. Subsequent changes every 5,000.
Changed my 2019 at 4,700. Subsequent changes every 5,000.
Both run great.

Mazda does use a high moly oil from the factory (same as Honda, Toyota, Subaru) for the 2.5 NA. I wouldn't change it before 7500km/5000 mi

It doesn't matter what it is, it's best to get the break-in junk out of there early. You'll have a higher amount of fuel in the oil, as well as silicone, iron, aluminum, and copper.

Interestingly, this is mandatory on BMW M cars. The computer holds back performance until the user has done an oil change at 1200 miles.

Apparently, from the perspective of the engineers at Mazda, it is ... sort of. At least in terms of initial break-in of the engine.

Most makers suggest giving a new vehicle (particularly performance vehicles) 600-1000 of basic plodding along at average/slower speeds to allow the engine to break in, prior to doing things like high-revving, towing, etc.

Doesn't surprise me that Mazda still recommends a certain spec for the first oil change.

Unless you know of a specific reason why Mazda's engineers are incorrect on this, if it were me (with a new vehicle) I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendation there.

Of course, the makers of full synthetic oils, for example, state their oils are capable of lasting 10Kmi+. And I still do oil changes every 5Kmi. But none of them make a distinction on the first oil change of an engine's life; Mazda does though.

I bet the manual wasn't written by the engineers ;)

Agree, written by Advertising and Marketing Department, IMHO. My position on break-in procedures and oil change interval (esp the first on) is very much different from most, so to avoid all the flames I would get I'll just be quiet. haha.

I changed mine out at 2,000 miles. The oil was nasty looking, watery thin and reeked of gasoline. No way was I going to run it for the 5,000 (?) miles suggested by Mazda.
That goes along with 2 other "suggestions" that I (and many others) ignored were:
> "lifetime" transmission fluid
> first coolant changeout at 10 years or 120,000 miles.

At 1,200 miles I had 4% fuel dilution. Piston rings take a little while to fully seat so those initial miles will let more stuff get by.

Agreed, but didn't want the oil contaminated with any more gasoline since due to my type of driving it would have taken another 5 months to get to 5,000 miles. That would have been a lot of rich running cold starts and short hops to work just 2 miles away. Can't imagine what the fuel dilution would have been.

I dont think the info in the app was written by the engineers and that is where the quote in my first post came from. The “guide” in that app.

I searched the owners manual itself and for the life of me, couldn’t find the same statement in there. Ni mention whatsoever.

So its the PR team thats likely written the app info. Whether engineering had any input to that is unknown.

The manual does however include the standard statements about more frequent oil changes in certain conditions such as lots of stop/start city driving, which is what we mainly do.

They state "the first FULL SERVICE... and oil change". (Edited for clarity).

Change that first oil no later than 3,000 miles. Change the filter, too. Use a good, name brand oil, in FULL SYNTHETIC.

After that, change it per the 'severe service' schedule, or set up the infotainment oil monitor recomendations.

the manual actually doesn't mention normal city driving. it says regular start/stop driving like a police vehicle or a taxi

To put a line under this, Im going to do the first oil change at 5000kms.

Will be in a few weeks time. Already have the oil and will get an OEM oil filter.
