First Day Of Driving

I picked the car up today. They had put another 9 km on it while testing so it had 26km when I got it. Man its a nice looking car. All you guys waiting had better get winter tires lined up .... the Bridgestones maybe great in the summer, but not now. Driving up to the tire place, 12km up Yonge St., it was almost impossible to start from a light without tire spin .... its not just any wet patches, its too damn cold for them. The tire guy said under about 7 or 8 degrees celsius they're no good and I'm inclined to believe him.
The steering of the car has to be tried to be believed, unless you already have an mp3. It's closer to a go-kart than my old Del Sol, and it was a great handling car. It's so direct and precise. The seats are super comfortable, but you really sit up high, again particularly compared to what I was used to. The shift is very low, but it becomes comfortable very quickly.
Needless to say you get lots of double-takes, but at most lights I had my head down trying to work out the stereo. Its capable of great sound, but you have to take the time to set it up.
Again I was lucky to have got the car at Avante. One of the mechanics has the same deck in his car so he had done a lot of the set up for me already ... although he and I apparently don't listen to the same radio stations.... it made it a lot easier .... the graphics are wild. The winters are on now, and the summers are stored, but it handles better with these because of the temperatures. I think I'll be spending a lot of time looking for highway exit and entry ramps .... catching one of those just right is the best. I'm up to around 90km now. Not bad for a first effort. Now I've got to go get the groceries ... that should bring me back down to earth.

thats great that the handeling is good, i look forward to driving it. i currently own an FC RX-7 (thats an 86 model) ...do you think that the handeling matches the superior handeling of the RX-7?

well it'll drive differently, since one is FWD while another is RWD.

you'll probably feel the front-heaviness inherent in a FWD car compared to the 50/50 balance in the rx-7

how do i know? well look at my cars :D

Hey...
Have fun with the car!
What kind of winter tires did you put on your car? Size, brand and how much did it all cost?

12 km from Avante to somewhere along Yonge st to change your tire? Sounds like you went to Tire Depot! :D

I went to where Avante get their stuff. Wheel & Tire Zone, right next to the Richmond Hill Avante .... they seem like good guys, knew their stuff, and stayed late on a Saturday to wait for me to get there so they could put my wheels on(drinks) I got 9 spoke Enkei rims with Yokohama AVS-V901's .... with taxes .... $1,725Cdn ... a lot for winter driving, but I do a lot of winter driving and depend on my car, and I was damned if I was going to have such a fine looking car with bad looking wheels for 3 or 4 months every year. Now my car looks sort of like this ......

i cant decide if i should get winter rims or steel pieces of crap. i dunno if ill ave money for rims...hrm...used on ebay!! :D

I forgot to mention ... I got 16" wheels and tires. When they were installing them they said 15" might fit but it would be pretty tight and he didn't think it would be a good idea.

it 'might' fit? So, i guess none of us still know whether or not, 15" fits. Just a question though, why did you spend all that money of a set of enkei 16's for snow/salt/slush? Why didn't you just go witha set of steelies? $1725CAN is alot of money for a set of winters.

There was 4 guys at the store. One was an owner, one was the guy who sold me the stuff and the other two actually put the wheels on. The guy who sold me the stuff walked up as the winter was going on and said there is still some room and 15" might fit. The guy doing the install put his hand in and said it would be real tight and he wouldn't do it, then the other installer came around and looked and he looked at me and just shook his head. I don't "mod" cars, I just drive them, and this is the first car I've bought snows for since my Celica in the early '80's ... what do I know?

The Enkei's were around and therefore marked down and easy to get on two days notice .... 9 spoke would not have been my first choice .... as far as the money, it was worth it to me strictly for looks. I don't like the looks of any car with steelies. Don't get me wrong, I know they are practical and cheap and for some a necessity, but I just couldn't go that route. I bought this car because it fulfilled my shopping list exactly:

1) It was different and rare. I love that part.
2) It has a back seat. I have had a 2 seater for 12 years. The wife had a van so it was all I needed. Now I have an ex-wive and I need the back seat to put the kids in when I'm lucky enough to see them.
3) Performance ..... 'nough said.
4) It is a bargain for what you are getting, and the budget was limited, but I factored in the wheels and alarm into my budget.
5) It needs to be good in the snow because if I need to get somewhere in winter, I need to get there no matter what.
6) I still wanted performance and handling on dry roads on a cold Canadian winter day.
7) A great stereo
8) Sharp "What the f**k was that?" looks .... summer and winter.

After the Celica, around 1985, I had a 320i and it was the biggest piece of crap in the snow because I went with all season radials. I had to put 200lbs of sand bags in the trunk to get around and I still got stuck a few times. Every spring at least one would have burst and there'd be a beach in my trunk. That was the last time I would have a car that sucked in the snow ... just doesn't make sense in Canada .... but I've still got to have the looks year round.

hey dpmmsp,

I see you live in the Toronto area. come out and check out the Toronto Protege Club at www.toprotege.com. Our message board is down, but will be back up shortly! If you join, you'll be the first member with a Mazdaspeed and the envy of everyone in the club! LOL.... Hope you can make it out to some meets in the near future! See you on the board and hopefully in person (with your car of course... ) :D

I know the site, its in my favorites. I wouldn't mind coming to some of the meets. How do you join?, does it cost?, a club "Secret Santa" ?

DPMmsp, join toprotege.com, I am with MPsport.net out west but will be coming to TO in January, to meet some of the TO people, it would be cool to hook up with a fellow MSP owner although I won't have my car with me.
