Finally BOOSTED!!!

Allllllright, today was our third day of install-and we finally have it running great at 6 pounds at about 85psi. We still need to do some re-routing for perminant use and we have to hook up my electronic gauges, but other than that were good to go!!!

A few things about the install:

-We ran into more than a few kinks. Some were just bad luck and others were related to the kit or small/tight fits. The intercooler was sure a b**** to get to fit between the bumper and the radiator and I didn't see anywhere in the instructions where it mentioned that in order to even put the bumper back on you had to cut a bunch of the inside bumper off (the stuff you can't see).

-A few of the hoses were either faulty or needed to be longer and I had to go out and buy replacements at checker. All in all I spent about 100$ bucks on replacement parts (hardware/tubes).

-The instructions were pretty vague on many things-and took a lot of phonecalls to try and figure out. A drawn model of each step would have been a good idea-the pictures were ok but only from that angle. A diagram would been good. It was more like the directions told you what to do, just not how to do it so much. Actually this board was a lot of help to us.

-On the bad luck side of things we had a stud break off on the pipe side of the Cat. It was a clean cut but was about 2 threads below the surface. We REALLY didn't want to cause anymore harm to those threads and cause us to buy a new Cat so we took it to a machine shop. The old fellow there said he could "try" to get it out with his welding technique but didn't want to cause any harm to the Cat since it is ALSO steel- so he gave us over to another company that uses lasers and electronic waves to separate hardware and god knows what else. It was VERY cool to see this done. It took them 30 minutes and they had that stud piece out of there perfect and clean-better yet it only cost 40$...Better than buying a new cat. That took care of the exhaust leaks.

-Also onthe bad luck side of things we ran into the same problem as 1stMP3inNH.. We were loosing all boost and it would stall. We had a clamp on too high on one of the IC pipes--easily fixed.

But I must say overall I am very happy. The setup looks killer and almost factory and the system seems to work very efficient and sounds BADASS!!!!! I'm looking forward o my exhaust getting here Wednesday-should add about 7-10 HP per FM's dyno tests.

For anyone looking for an aftermarket BOV for this kit get the Flyin' Miata one!! It fits perfect and goes on without ANY mods, plus the sounds is beyond cool.

I'll post more tomorrow after we get through final tuning!

I am glad to hear that you are BOOSTED! Hopefully I will be there soon. I think that being broke for a few weeks is worth the satisfaction, so I think that I will keep my Turbo Kit.

One of the things that we're doing at FM is rewriting the instructions :) There shouldn't be any need to go out and buy extra parts, either. That's the joy of getting a pre-release kit!

Glad to hear you've got it all on and that it's running well. Welcome aboard!

Yessir!!! Being boosted rules. But I must say I haven't driven it more than twice, and the first time was with the vaccum leak. So I REALLY haven't got to get on it yet. There were three rather large guys in the car on the test drive as well. I'm looking forward to having it back tonight!! I'm in love with the FM BOV. Highly recomend it.

I look forward to the feul solution so we can get this puppy up to 7-8 psi. It feels like right around 6 is when it starts to SERIOUSLY take off. I can't imagine how 8 would feel.

Hehe, sweet, I was just gonna ask you guys to rewrite the instructions. Pretend we're all idiots and put down every step you can.

smp: how did you break that bolt in the cat anyway?

Well we had an air gun.. There are three bolts. The firstone came off easy. The sedond one came off WITH the stud on it. And the third was being difficult and just snapped. Not the best thing to happen. I'll tell you Studs are now my least favorite thing of all time. We had a heck of a time with that double nutt application method.

Did anyone else have a hard time getting the IC to fit?

Why do you think I haven't turned mine down to 6 yet. ALthough it is probably causing damage. Have you had any knock at all? Lucky you on the fuel pump mine only goes to 80 PSI max but then again ratio wise its actualy to rich.

Also my idle and stalling are not simply a result of a loose hose. Originaly the car was only boosting to 6 but slowly dropped lower know it get to 8 fairly quick and the idle is ruff plus the cars idle can go all the hell over the place if I have to get to a quick stop. Also the A/C seemw to reak hell on the idle.

The weird one was that I floored the car in 5th 3 nights ago and the car immediatly stalled, never accelerated at all and the head light blew out. While I was going 60 through Boston Traffic. NOT COOL :wtf:.

Well good luck hopefully you have a better run at it then I am having.

Yes on the I/C. First you have to move the power steering cooler then had to hack a tone of plastic out from under the bumper. I also had to move alot of the platic in the tray area above the grill.

Thanks guys!!! :)

Unfortunately we didn't get everyhting done that we wnated to. The guages are mounted but not hooked up-I have the faintest clue what to do since they're electronic and the EGT requires a manifold tap. Also, the turbo timer got pushed off and that is also siting in my room. I'm thinking aobut paying to get it all put on professionally-saves me the time and frustration. (My buddy went back to Cali-he has all the car brains)

My exhaust comes tomorrow and I can't wait to get that puppy on, should help a lot!!!

Right now the only problem we're having is a very poor idle, we've checked all vaccum lines and all seem well. not so sure what that is.

Could you elaberate on this. I am having some realy funky problems with idle also.

I am having a slight idle problem too. The car idles fine, but every so often it almost dies then it catches itself and keeps an idle till it almost dies again, its like every 15 seconds. I am going to re-run all of my vacuum hoses, and check all of my intercooler connections.

Also do any of you guys have any problems with stalling, when you are coming out of boost. I am thinking when my emanage gets here and I tune the car I won't have any of these problems anymore.

You are right on.. That's exactly how mine idles.... I'm not so sure what's going on. We called Corky, and all he could tell us was to check all our connections. He also said that there are certain ways to rout all the vaccum lines so that there isn't a problem, but I have no idea how to do so.

Hopefully once I get the exhaust on and re-check all the IC pipes, it will get better.

Exactly! The is the absolutely same problem I have been having. Described perfectly. Are all of us using MP3's with this problem? I have even cranked the idle to 850 to compensate and it won't stall but it comes close.

If you're seeing idle problems, first thing I'd look at would be fuel pressure. You may want to replumb your fuel pressure gauge so that it's in the feed line to the rail, not in the line between stock and Bell fprs. Too much fuel pressure at idle will definitely cause stalling. Our P5 has never had any issues with stalling since day one, so something is wrong in your setup, I think.

I found it rather strange the 3 people using the BEGI kit all have the same problem with idle and another person running a custom kit does also.

How can we fix the fuel problem at idle? I thought the BEGI FPR only functioned under boost.

Mine wasn't doing this till just recently, but I am usin crappy vacuum hoses. Ok is your car constantly doing it, or is there a period where it just does it and stops doing it for a few seconds. Mine did it constantly up and down but we forgot to hook up the MAF sensor. After we hooked that back up and the idling problem stopped. So I think something like a vacuum line came loose, we also idled my car up for the eurathane motor mounts, so the car want shake as bad at idle.

And what fuel pressuire should it be at idle?

Mine will do it randomly under normal driving. But if you have to stop after using boost then it always crashes to around 400 RPM now, only since I up'ed the idle. Before it would go to 200 rpm or stall. Many times I can watch the RPMs dance around 800 going down to 600 and up to 1K, just continously fluctualting. Other times it sits right where it should. THe A/C seems to be the biggest antaganist of the problem, the car is always more stable with it off. Also the A/C is not the largest draw ionthe electrical system in my car. My amps can easily draw over 100 amps. When really banging my car will almost stall and I have a 180 amp alternator.
