Factory Turbo option?

With the 2003 Protege coming out with a new factory turbo system, do you think this with been a direct bolt on option for the current Protege's ?

In my experience, when a factory turbo is installed, the manufacturer usually does more than just "bolt it on."

I would say that most of the time you would see the engine running with much lower compression than seen in the normally aspirated version of the engine.

Just something to keep in mind.

THe Mazdaspeed is just a bolt on factory warrenied tubro kit. same engin as ours no lowered compression it is still 9:1 this is why I am dissapointed I was hopign to see forged internals lowered compression and all but nope just a turbo kit slapped on much like when mazda offered the miata with a jackson Supercharger factory warrentied.

I suppose if this turbo kit was an aftermarket option for our cars we could go to one of the many places they are installed and have them put it on and reprogram our ECU's. It would be dumb of them not to make more turboes than the number of Mazdaspeed Protege's. I bet a lot of people would jump on this in a second.

Do remember that the Mazdaspeed is in noway done by Mazdausa. They are just supplying the 2000 Protege's to North America from Japan. About 90% of the car is still produced in Japan, then shipped to Calloway where they install the actual turbo kits, Sparco goodies and such. So Mazda as a company doesn't actually produce a Turbo'd FS motor, Calloway does. As far as someone like JE or Crower making forged rods or pistons, it may be pretty difficult to get that done seeing as how there are so few Turbo'd Proteges.

Like I said before, lower compression and forged internals aren't always needed. Having a properly tuned turbo setup is, however, very important. Lowering the compression makes running a turbo safer and using forged internals makes running higher boost safer. But still all the forged internals in the world ain't gonna save your motor if it isn't tuned correctly. I'm sure any turbo head will agree that tuning will take you a lot farther than forged internals and lowering the compression will. I think people on this board are a little to worried about getting forged internals. I personally would be more worried about proper fuel delivery and tuning. What we should all ask our selves is...."How fast do I want to go and how much do I want to spend?" The way I'm starting to see it is that you can dump $4500 dollars on a custom Turbo kit only to be able to run possible mid-low 14 second quarter mile. And that will be putting the stock FS block at it's limits shy of diving into the internals. But then we'd be as bad as all the Civic guys who spend $7k dollars on their rides. The reason I bought my MP3 is because I wanted something cool looking and different and that would out handle my other Civics. If I wanted something faster I would have bought a Spec V, WRX, GS-T, Golf 1.8T, RSX Type-S, or something that runs mid-low 15's stock in the quarter and has plenty of aftermarket already developed. I'm not trying to knock you guys who desire more power from your MP3's or P5's, just know you won't be burning any big blocks if that's what you're hoping for. Hope you guys get all the boost you want.:)

I agree with you wholeheartedly, APEXistud! Heck, there are tons of beefed up used Detroit Power Machines out there (prepared to burn up the road) that cost a lot less than our cars.

Sure we want more power in our sporty, superior handling, good-looking cars. But at what price? I figure that if I still love my P5 at about 50K miles, then I'll start looking into the possibility of dropping a V6 into it. That ought to cost only a little more than a turbo. If there isn't a V6 made to fit it by then, maybe I'll get a new car.

I'm all for adding a catback and a cold-air intake to pop up the horses a bit in the meantime, but a turbo just seems to be a way expensive outlay for the payback.

Just MHO.

according to the website and mazdaspeed pro. promotional ad that mazda has on the website mazda will be relasing all of the options on the mspro. as dealer accesories. Don't know when but looks like mazdausa is now going to start importing protege parts from mazdaspeed. I might be wrong on that, but thats the impression i got when i read the acrobat spec sheets. I hope im not.

It will be a while though before we start seeing these Mazdaspeed products. The article said that it will be in about 18 months. I don't want to wait that long for the manifold.

I may actually wait that long before I install my turbo as I don't want to void my warranty....but I was thinking that the manifolds offered by either spoolin or chdesign would be sturdier anyhow for higher boost type applications and I'd buy stuff like that as the paychecks come in rather than in one big huge purchase. :)

I have a decent idea. Why don't we all band together and shoot a mass email containing the names and email addresses of interested MP3 and P5 owners over to the Calloway asking or demanding that some attention be given to the first gen 01 Protege MP3 and P5 owners. I'm sure they would have some interesting in giving some of the power hungry MP3 owners a hand in developing a bolt-on turbo kit. Do realize that they'd only be interested if there was some money to be made on their part. I'm personally am not interested in turboing my MP3, but I am willing to help all of those who do want a turbo as much as I can. I'm not sure how many people we would need, but it has to start somewhere.

Good Idea apexi. why dont' we make a thread, and anyone who is interested PM or E-mail a website leader we choose to send the letter explaining out conserns and wants. And then everyone can give there E-mail, phone, addy, whatever..... I'm sure at least 50-100 peeps would sign up. :D
