So my best friend (who is black) moves here from Germany a few months ago. He gets into some cheap ass apartments because for some reason Lawton is short on apartments. Now he wants to get something nicer because his lease is almost up...so he asks me about two weeks ago if there are any open apartments in my area (my wife and i live in the most expensive, and biggest apts around this city), and i was like lemme ask.

so he came over one day and we stopped in the office and asked the apt manager...shes like "i dont have anything open until at LEAST september but ill put you first on the list"...now three days ago my neighbor (white guy, Captain) moves out, and im sitting here making dinner for my wife and the b**** brings this other white guy to look at the apt across from me! :wtf:

i know she has known he was leaving for over a month because you are required to put in a 30 day notice, and he was only here for captain's career course which is 6 mos long, so i know he told her how long he was gonna be here for. which is why he signed a 6 mo lease.

i know that b**** is racist. dammit. anyways, had to vent. now that i think about it, there is only like 1-2 black families that live here (stooges)

talk to the lady, ask her wtf is going on. probably a misunderstanding, but if its actually a racist issue thats just ****** up, i mean cmon people..

maybe the white guy was on "the list"
well this isnt the first instance of racism, or i might believe that. two reasons that make me not believe that:

1) this new guy is a captain, which means he JUST got here for captains career course
2) my nieghbor is black, we have the same style apt, and her rent got raised from 595 to 615 for no reason...mine didnt.

maybe your neighbor is loud, messy, late with rent? I dunno. I'm a landlord myself, and if I wanted to get rid of someone, I'd raise the rent. has nothing to do with race, just some people are more of a pain then their worth.

youre totally right...im speaking more of a generally term - as in, if you look at the big picture.

I know how that goes man. Investigate, to propagate, then initiate tha plan... :p

Just thought I'd throw in some Jesse Jackson....

On the real man, that is ****** up if it is true, and of course there are laws against that s***. If you can prove it, you have a case.

Funny thing is that a lot of people don't really think racism exist anymore. They are far to comfortable in their nice little world to actually see all the things that really go on around them...

Just because he just arrived for the Captain's course doesn't mean that he hadn't already contacted the leasing office. Yeah, it does sound like racism, but to be honest, I highly doubt it. The Fair Housing Act pretty much keeps leasing agents in check because it is inforced very fervently (at least here in NC). Trust me, this lady would probably rather rent to a black guy, even if she is racist, than have to deal with what comes along with violating the Fair Housing Act. My girlfriend is a property manager and it amazes me the way she has to tiptoe around doing certain things just to cover her and her company's respective asses.

OK,this is right up my alley!
First, you can call your local news...they will investigate.THey love s*** like this.
Second, call your local equal housing right authorities..They will also investigate...brings a lot of trouble and makes a lot of noise people dont like.
Might also be list as a Fair Housing authority...Prob is.
After that, have another "BLACK" friend go just for s**** and grins and see what she says to them...Make sure you have them ask for the same thing..Tape it or record it somehow
GOTCHa!
LAWSUIT READY!
Trust me on this,IT IS my BUSINESS!

This is 100% true but it does not apply in all states.OH is not hard about it but we still hae all the Fair housing authorities.I am in Property Management as well.

this happens a lot, especially here in AZ. my gf's friend (the token black person in the masters program here) tried to get an apartment. she went to see this place and was told it wasn't available, even though it was just put on the market. my gf goes just to see if she can get it cause nina had a bad feeling about it. well, low and behold... the apartment was for rent, and was available for immediate signing. then when confronted with the situation, the landlord called her a filthy spade loving b**** and left. heh heh. silly white folks.

They get away with this? I guess I'm naive. In my parents neighborhood there are a good number of black families and the houses range from 250,000-400k. Still predominately white, but I figured if no one had a problem there, who the hell cares about a lousy apartment?

I guess a lot of it has to do with how large of a company you are working for. I'd love to say that it's 100% not a racial issue, but that probably will never happen, esp. since this is Oklahoma we are talking about.

frickin' housing discrimination. hate that. definately get on the landlord's case and try to get a case going and have your friend move in. people shouldn't be allowed to be left out of an opportunity just because of their race

unfortunately, yes. when people put a 3 unit complex up, apparently, they can do whatever they want. i know my current landlord now didn't show an apartment to a white supremacist guy who was looking to rent from him. he showed up in this big confederate flag decorated car, "white power" tattood on his knuckles, the confederate flag on the back of his neck, and flames on his head with white pride tattooed on the tips of the flames. as he was telling me this, on the one hand, i thought, thank god i didn't have to deal with that guy... on the other hand, i felt kind of bad for the guy.

my landlord said he told the guy the apartment already had people who were "tentatively going to lease it" so he'll let the guy know if they back out. no one has even looked at the apartment yet. it just got moved out of a week ago. reverse discrimination?

hmmm, interesting. I guess it makes sense that if you own a place, it is like your buisness. If I was looking at a place where my neighbor was a clan dude, I'd have to pass on the joint. I suppose you can't trust people not to cross the line of discretion and racism though. Confederate flag people scare me, although they would even more if I were black.

I have to second this. I'm a Realtor and property manager and I can say that I'm not the only one thats ******* terrified of some overly suspicious asshole that sicks heraldo,an attorney, and Fair Housing on me all at the same time.

I believe that the absolute vast majority of Realtors and property managers break thier backs to please when they are showing a home to someone who might think they are being discriminated against.

I do my part that I can say for sure.
