Exhaust's

I'm wondering what exhaust you guys are running with? I've been looking around for one and i cant decide. I live in CA so the restrictions here are horrible. I'd love to go with a 3" but i dont want to worry about getting a stupid ass ticket for it being to loud. I've checked out the clips on youtube for the Vibrant, Greddy sp2, etc. Does anyone have a recomendation for a quiet exhaust?

Stick with the stock exhaust.

Do they do sniffer exhaust tests in CA? If not, then get a bigger mid-pipe (J-pipe + cat pipe) with a single high-flow cat. Cheaper, quieter, but not as much HP gain as the Vibrant or others.

Every exhaust for the MSP aren't that loud especially if there is a cat, resonator and muffler. Right now I'm catless and it's not too bad. Right now I'm at work and I can't go on YouTube but if you search for smootnaman, I've got my exhaust setup on there.

I ran with the Vibrant exhaust for about a year. On road trips from VA up to NY (6 hours) my ears would be ringing halfway through the trip and that's with the silencer in. Too loud in my opinion, but I doubt I would ever get a ticket for it.

Another option would be to have a custom exhaust made to mirror the stock piping and use the stock muffler. ONRAILS had this done on his car and it sounded pretty quiet when I met up with him and he said it had pretty good performance gains. Since I now have an extra MSP exhaust I may go that route, especially if I learn how to weld.

That is exactly what I am talking about. You wouldn't need to replace anything else in your system. That would replace the full J-pipe and you would leave your stock mid-pipe and axle-back exhaust.

Niiiice, i'm thinking that mite be the way for me to go :)
IS the gain going to be that less of a vibrant or so on?
I think i mite switch out the axle-back.....
hmmmmm.

i'm not sure what your states restrictions are, but as long as i keep my cat i'm legal but it has to stay under 96 decimals....

I think i mite switch out the axle-back only cause i dont like the look of the stock exhaust to much..

the GHL, tho very expensive comparitivly, is really quiet, i barely hear it in my car. Im running a high flow cat (not sure if that would work out there) and a resonator pipe.
im no good with decibles but if you want i think i might be able to get a reading fairly easily.

the vibrant with the silencer isnt that loud either, it comes installed you have to remove it to make the exhuast louder

With a Hi-flo cat, resonator and a good muffler the exhaust can be pretty quiet. I was told last night that my exhaust was quiet... Yeah right! But I don't have the cat, with a cat on there it would be.

I must be getting old because I thought the Vibrant was too loud even with the silencer on there. The gains of just replacing the J-pipe I would guess would be half that of the Vibrant. It's also half the price, so there you go.

To stay legal in CA, you need to have both cats. you could always run catless and swap out the catless for your stock pipe come smog time.
Dont know how bad the cops are in your area but if you are caught with out your cats , it is a hefty fine.

Holy s*** on me the GHL exhaust is really expensive!

Hmm, I think i should just move to another state so i dont have to worry about being legal haha.

Theoretically the rules are the same here in NY. They don't do sniffer tests yet as far as I have seen and the visual inspections are pretty lax so I can get away with a lot. Eventually every state will enforce CA rules and we'll all be screwed.

Hmm yeah i think i'm going to pick up that set up from protegegarage.com that seems pretty chill and i'm sure i'll get noticable gains. I'm probably going to switch out the muffler though for somthing more sporty, i just need to find a quiet one cause i hate not being able to hear anything other then my exhaust lol. Thank for all your help man i really appreaciate it!

before you make a decision, talk to some of the CA guys. Im giving one guy my stock cats because he can't pass emissions with a single hi-flow cat. so you got it strict there.

It's not that bad but it can get scarry. I know I'm a lot further (modded) than what most people will go, I'm going to have to pay someone to pass my car.
