exhaust for P5

OK, I've searched around on this site about exhaust for a P5 and there are two things everyone seems to agree on: 1)the best diameter to use is 2.25" 2) the stock exhaust is 2.25"

so basically, all I really need to do for exhaust (not including headers and cat. converter) is buy a different muffler? Am I on the right track or did I miss something?

a full cat back system or just back half bolt on exhaust are you wanting? looks and power?

No, I'm just asking: if the best exhaust is 2 1/4" and the stock is 2 1/4", why not just buy a muffler rather than paying for new piping? Looks aren't all that important, it's just exhaust- it's going to get nasty anyway.

the stock exhaust is only 2." it has plenty of flow through it, but that is not where the big restriction is. it's the downpipe in front of the secondary cat. that thing is is only 1.7" in diameter. in order for there to be sufficient airflow, that downpipe has to be enlarged a little bit. i am looking into going 2.25" all the way from the primary cat-back with a hi-flow secondary cat.

if you don't want to go through the trouble, any cat-back will give you minimal gains. an axle-back will give you little to no gain but will definitely add a nice rumble to your ride.

because NC has really large fines for those who don't have a converter and we have to have one to pass inspection

NCkid, you said it man. Rrelly sucks though cause right across the border in SC you don't even have to have an exhasut. BTW have you heard about the Charlotte meet? Where are you from. Check the thread for it as we have about 30 Pros lined up to be there. Should be a great meet, I know our first one was.
