Excelon??? What Exelon!?!

Everything in my mp3 has excelon written on it. Rear speakers, sub, and head unit. Can't tell if fronts are.

MSP, clearly the brouchure says excelon, but the head unit is not.

Speakers? Not sure, can't see em.

rear amp? smallest amp they make...same for sub. Impressive huh.

trust me, if it was excelon vs. non-excelon..with those craptacular kenwood speakers and sub..you wouldnt hear the difference..go MB quart..

The amp is definilty non excelon.
When I checkled on the MP3s speakers they were not excelon part numbers that I could find and there pictures were identical to regular kenwood line speakers.
I am all but sure the MSPs sub is also not an excelon peice.

I'll let you know about the sub tomorrow after I get my JL Audio put in the factory enclosure :D

Okay,

I had JL put in with some sound deadening and a JL amp today and it sounds much better then the factory sub. We went with a a W3v2 8". There is no way in hell anything bigger is going to fit in that box.

The factory sub is nicer looking then I expected, but it doesn't say Excelon on the cone, it has a read "W" on it.

on the back it says:

Kenwood
KFC-WR/UM3
T10-1165-08

It's marked as 8 ohms impedence
on the other side it says "NOM 125W" I am guessing that's power rating.

It looks like it's a single voice coil.

Yeah...I knew the sub, amp, and head weren't excelon by the pics in the brochure...It's hard to tell with all the component speakers, though...they look like 2-way excelons in the picture.

Hey JRod...how much did the W3v2 8" run you? Was it a PITA to install? And why'd you change the amp (other than to have a higher quality amp)...would the Kenwood still have done the job?

I have been wondering about that sub. I know the lit on it says its a 8 ohm sub but the website says its a 4 ohm. A 8 ohm sub will only get 1/2 of the power the kenwood amp has to give it but that may have been intentional becuse of heat issues with the stupid amp mounted upside down.

The W3 was around $120 I think. I had my stereo shop do the install for me. They said it barely fit in the enclosure but it fit. I changed the amp because I already had a JL audio amp. The Kenwood may have done the job, but the more power the better.

Anyone have an idea as to how the W3v2 sounds versus say a W0? I can pick up a 4 ohm W0 at tweeter for like 80$ (I'm sure I could find it for less, but hey...they're right here so why run around?) and if it would sound significantly better than the kenwood I might consider it after my turbo timer. Also...do you think the sound deadening in the enclosure helps out that much? Sorry...these are probably dumb questions, but just consider me a new trainee.

Being mounted where it is and with the amp it is mated to brings up some issues. If that was a totaly solid enclosure thent he W0 will sound better and the W3 will go deeper louder. However I still don't know what the impedance of the factory sub is. If it was 8 ohms then that was to prevent the amp from frying as its upside down. So chucking a 4 ohm sub in there may kill the amp.

interesting thread guys....keep going :)

btw, for the record, the 6x9's in my mp3 say excelon on them. 698's actually.

Yes, mine were replaced under warranty, and those aren't stock. But, I made a big deal when my old ones started to rattle that they better damn sure they replace them with excelons as the ones in her were at the time were excelon. Can't remember the model number sorry. Anyhow, Mazda replaced them with the 698's. I actually really like them for a kenwood speaker and all.

I can take a pic if ya don't believe me :)
