Enging nightmares

My husband, as I mentioned, has a VERY good job and I had one also until my boss CANNED ME the day after I told him I was pregnant. You try finding a damned job when your pregnant...oh wait, you're probably a MAN you wouldn't understand that.

Isnt that highly illegal?
Lawsuit?

Yes, VERY illegal..... unfortunately also VERY hard to prove. I spoke to a lawyer after it happened. Basically, unless it is documented somewhere that my reason for termination was SPECIFICALLY because of pregnancy, theres very little a judge can do. I was a manager for Gingiss Formalwear at the time. I was flat out told to my face that I "would be 7 months pregnant during prom season and they needed someone who would be able to do tuxedo runs and be on their feet for 12 hours.... not someone who would have to keep taking off for doctors appointment or take frequent breaks." Unfortunately, there is no way to prove to a judge.

did you check car-part like someone suggested? someone said there are a couple engines around St louis for 600 dollars. i dont know if you saw that or not.

That happened to my Fiance, look for a local "fair labor and housing commission", they WILL do a very thurough investigation, you can choose to get your job back or take a settlement.......the settlement is based on the time you were fired until the approximate time you would have left for maternity leave.........it didn't take very long either, and the Labor board is a state office so their service is absolutely free, they talk to other employees and everything, they request your records from that employer, as well as shut them down for a while so they can investigate........my fiance got $4500 for lost wages......The state office said that if she were to retain an attourney she could have filed a sexual discrimination suit worth up to $450,000, but her dad worked there so she didn't want to go that route.......just my .02

Ok, why you are being such a jerk is beyond me.

My husband, as I mentioned, has a VERY good job and I had one also until my boss CANNED ME the day after I told him I was pregnant. You try finding a damned job when your pregnant...oh wait, you're probably a MAN you wouldn't understand that.

We got into debt before my husband got the job he;s in now. We moved in with my mother so we could start paying off debt instead of paying high rent (which, unfortunately, is a fact of life in my area)

Yes, I am a stay at home mom. If, by some miracle we found a SAFE daycare that was even REMOTELY affordable, AND if I could find a job that would PAY enough to put two children (a 28 month old and a 6 month old) in daycare full time (about $400 a WEEK in this area) then, yes...I WOULD go back to work. If you want to help me pay for daycare, BE MY GUEST!

Actually I have a 9 month old child, and my wife DID have to find a job while she was pregnant. What you NEED to do is sacrifice and find a job with a shift opposite your husband, That way daycare isnt necessary. If you don't get to see him, oh well. At least you can pay your bills and afford to keep your vehicle running.

(blah) I listen to people like you every day who b**** about their financial situation but don't want to do anything to fix it. I have no sympathy.

Ok, did you not read my post where I said that I work from home?

Also, jerk, I spent 9 months looking for a "traditional" job... NO ONE WOULD HIRE ME. I live in a city where there have been so m any layoffs that the market is flooded. Who do you think an employer would hire...? A woman who would have to take "maternity leave" (WHICH, I would not be entitled to since I would have to work there for a YEAR to be elgible) or a woman (or man) who would be completely undistracted.

Obviously, you haven't read the post that my husband and I sold off everything we owned (including my wedding ring) moved out of the expensive apartments to live with my MOTHER of all people and places. We don't spend money on ANYTHING that we don't need. Before you be a jerk and tell me to sell my ******* computer, WE DON"T OWN A COMPUTER, it belongs to my mother.

HERE's a thought! Why don't YOU go out and get a better job so your wife can do HER job and stay home with her baby.... not dumping them off on a daycare. Beli

Wow, just found this thread this morning... wow

People tried to help you, yet you didn't seem to want to take that help all that willingly. A lot of people end up in situations like that, you're not alone. A lot of the financial advice seemed sincere, yet you continued to call people jerks and jackasses. You expect people to respect and sympathize for you if you are hostile toward members? The fact of the matter is, repairing the car is going to cost you money. There is no free way to fix it, period. This is a mazda enthusiast forum, not a financial support helpline.

Well, looks like you are pretty worked up for nothing. I understand how you may feel very frustrated and have someone stepped on you, but I spent some time to think in your shoes and here is what I am thinking (you might thought about that already but hear me out):

These are the problems I've identified based on what you posted:

1. Dead car
2. Your only car is also dying
3. No job for you
4. 2 kids you can't afford to put in day-care
5. You are pregent
6. Living with your mom giving you a lot of grieve
7. You need some extra money... quick

First ofall you should revisit your budget... Yes, yes I know you've already done that many times, but do it again... I don't know what structure you are currently using, but based on your current situation how about:

List all your credit payment out (CC, car payment, insurance, loan repayment)

Then you have what's left to spend on essentials... (Diapers, food, gas, etc.) Now visit all your previous spending on these essential items one by one and see if you can find a better deal (Instead of Micky-D meal for you and your kids, try only ordering dollar menu items; or no Micky D; Instead of brandname diapers, try a cheaper brand or wait for it to go on sale if you can... This can go on and on)

Then, go to some non-profit organization who help tight budget family like yours in grocerys, insurance, debt consolidations, and see if they will be of any help. (I know, living on food stamps doesn't seem to be very dignifying, but remember, you'll only be in this situation temperory and you'll be back on your feet sooner than you think)

I forget if you mentioned debt consolidation yet, you can also call your creditors and explain your situation to see if they'll cut you some room here and there (a dollar here might not seem much, but every penny counts at this point!)

I don't know how much you are making from your home-based business, if it's not helping much, try going through some newspaper and find some part-time jobs you can apply for (admin. assistant or temp. clerk) Since you have experience you're better off in this situation because its just a temp. or part time position anyway, who knows, you might found an employer who is willing to work with your situation simply because he knows you can get your job done while you're working...

In terms of your broken P5, see if your brother can help by letting him tow and fix it, see if you can borrow some money from him (cuz sounds like he might be able to do that with his skills, etc.) If you are able to do that, get it fixed and SELL THE CAR... Take the lost now and get another used-car so you can buy minimum insurance and give more room to your budget... Yeah, you might shell out money to fix both cars, but at least the expense is still lower compare to keeping the P5...

This is my sincere thought and I hope you don't feel like I'm trying to school you or anything... :D

I'm sorry no one would hire you.....perhaps you should develop a skill, other than name calling....The attitude alone tells me how well you interview..If the city you live in is SOOO desolate(yet so expensive to live in (boom07) ?) ,Perhaps you should move to a location with more work. That's what my father did to support me when I was a child(Single father with 2 kids) ....Or you can continue to make excuses why you have no money and a broken car you can't afford to fix....I know people like that..They listen to your advice and tell you a million reasons why that won't work and won't attempt to do any REAL work to fix the situation.

P.S....I don't use daycare....My wife and myself take care of our baby. My wife is a modern woman and knows in this day and age families don't survive on one income. She also knows what birth control is so we don't have another child before we are financially stable enough to support it.

I'll leave you with a famous quote

Just caught up with this thread... man, what a situation.

Here's your solution. You're paying the wrong debts!!! Start looking at that car like its a credit card... take your insurance premium and count that like interest. Add the actual interest your paying on your car's financing. Now compare that "effective interest rate" to the rate on credit cards (or wherever your debt is sitting) that you're sacraficing so much to pay off. I'm guessing this "effective interest rate" on your car (interest payments on financing + insurance cost) is WAYYY higher than the interest rate on your other debt. Start paying minimum payments on those other debts and start saving for an engine swap to get out from under this car.

My approach doesn't even factor in the hit your car value is taking in depreciation as it sits in your garage. Even though no miles are being added, its still got to be worth another 2% toward the effective interest rate.
Invite me to your house warming party and we'll call it even.

If you're really nice, you could probably get some local members to set up a meet at Mom's house and do the swap for you.

The Engine swap is possible to do with basic mechanical skills, a digital camera to take pictures of where all the connections go. A Tackle box with a pen to make where the bolts come out from and some help from ME..

I have done this to two cars and it's not as hard as you might think.

I would like nothing more than to hear that your P5 is running again.

P.S. Car-parts.com is where I got my motor for $700.00 USD delivered...

Well It looks (sounds) like I'll be tearing into my motor this weekend. My slight knocking just got worse tonight. Its to the point that I'm borrowing my father in laws truck tonight because the Pro isn't going anywhere. Gonna try & refinance the house to get some extra cash and a lower interest rate for a lower house payment.

I don't need zoom zoom BOOM!

Too bad MAM has a 3 month back log on built motors.

I have a good 2.0l engine block and crank with brand new waterpump, oil pump, timing belt, tensioner, etc.

All you would need is rods and pistons. If your motor seized than it was more than likely a crank bearing. You may even be able to get away with using your old rods and pistons with new rings and bearings.

If your interested let me know.
