hey guys im new here and to mazdas but anyway i rebuilt a motor for someone that spun a bearing. this is the first time i have ever worked on a mazda, i have rebuilt my ls1 before and had no problems. so i got everything put back together and in the car and when i go to turn the key all i get is a click. nothing at all from the starter, so i was thinking it was maybe something to do with a ground or possibly the clutch but im just taking a shot in the dark here its a 2002 mazda protege es with the 5 speed. If anyone has any ideas please let me know all help is apreciated if you need to know any other information please just ask.
thank you,
tony

Mods: if this is in the wrong section please move it to the right section again i am new to the forum.

The alarm never went off when i hooked the battery back up. Im just clueless as to what it could be. what woud it have been if the alarm went off?

yeah the battery is fine i charged it all night before trying to start it i did no check the fuse yet but i will tonight after work and ill let you know what i find.

also check the crank sensor since it is primary input for the pcm after cranking.

You guys are missing the obvious here...Have you tried to turn the engine over by hand?

If its not turning over...it can really only be two things.
If the Starter is clicking...Is it engaging?
If so....Then why isnt it turning over?
If its clicking its obviously getting power....

SO then that goes back to my first statement...have you tried to turn the engine over by hand.

yes i have tried turning the engine over by hand and its turns fine. im lost here could it be the starter itself? or like i said before is it a bad ground? basically it acts like trying to start your car without disengaging the clutch.

Check the sensors and the hookups. The engine won't start if there are any reference errors with the cam position sensor or the crank position sensor.

The car only needs to honk at you to let you know you triggered the starter kill that is built in to the alarm. All you have to do is press lock twice and unlock once on the remote and you should be able to start your car.

As for the sensors the only one that will prevent the starter from doing its job is the one on the clutch pedal. Cam and crank both need to have something moving past them before they can tell the ECU anything.

thanx guys and yes i can hit the lock twice and it will honk at me as for the one on the clutch pedal im sorry but im not following? could you please explain where i can find it.

its just i dont ever remmember messing with the master cylinder clutch pedal assembly? but yeah it honks when i lock the car so it has to be something with the clutch i will check the one thats on the clutch pedal but i dont ever remmember disconnecting it.

ok i checked the ground and that is good, i checked the crank and cam position sensors are both fine the fues for the starter is also fine im going to check the sensor on the clutch pedal (is it located on the clutch pedal itself or is it in the engine bay?) after work. but if its not that cauld it be that im not getting enough hydrolic pressure through the clutch to disengage it? I never bleed the clutch after the install. the pedal pressure seemed a little soft but maybe that could be it ill try that too and let you guys know what i find. thanx again for all the help so far.

Take the starter out and have it tested. If all you are getting is a click then the motor in the starter could be bad. And to let you know the starter will not click if the clutch switch is bad same if the alarm is going off.

Alright I have been super busy with work school n the holidays and have found no time to work on the car but I got a chance last night. I bled the clutch and nothing happens it did stiffin the pedal though, but I did find something else a sensor wasn't plugged in. I can't find where it goes though there is no open plug anywhere near it. I feel like an idiot cause it's prolly right infront of my face but I will post pics of the sensor and the general location tonight hopefully someone will know where it goes.

alright here is a picture of the connector its a green and white wire comig from the connector and it branches off with a ground wire.

^ that is located right under the intake next to the battery and it naturally wants to go over by he starter. hopefully this helps but if you need more pictures or any other information please just let me know and i will do my best to provide it.
thank you,
tony

It's not the connector for your Throttle Position sensor is it? I'm pretty sure that the car isn't going to run if that thing is unplugged. Maybe it's for your EGR valve sensor connector - it looks to be down in that general area. I would say it's a transmission switch, but I don't think the manual trannys have anything in that area that needs a connector.
