Engine ticking

Im fairly sure mine is comming from the block. Near the belts on the right. But iam willing to try anything. I have the ingen cai and it feels sturdy. Where is it that it was rubbing that was making a tick?

Damn, I too have had a "ticking" since I installed the CAI. I looked everywhere under the hood to find out what it was, but no luck. I can't see where it would be hitting anything. It has been driving me crazy....

Sonic. see your still tickin away :(. Don't ffel bad man. I'm a ticker too. My ticking seems to be coming from the same place as yours?......whatcha wanna bet our were on the assembly line the day after some big japanese holliday?

Does anybody have any new word of wisdom on engine ticking? My ticking just started in the last month It is similar to the stories described above. It almost sounds like loud fuel injectors. It comes from right near the top of the engine and is a rather loud tick at idle. It's loudest after the engine is warmed up. My car is totally stock with about 27k miles. Engine performance seems fine. I was wondering if it might have to do with the spark plugs since they are getting close to their replacement interval (30k). Have others fixed this and how was it solved? Thanks!

Thanks, 503. If that could be my problem, I better get it into the dealer pretty quickly beofre any more wear occurs. The noise did seem to appear "overnight" so a spun bearing matches something that could happen suddenly. How long was your bomb ticking before you took it in?

Anybody else have a different fix for their ticking? It's the first time anybody has mentioned a spun bearing.

Yea, my ticking has reached it's high point now in my car too.

I change the oil constantly but still ticks. Ticks less when you have alot of oil, usually i'll hear it ticking alot and then i'll chack the oil and it's near the Low line. (dunno)

put your hand on the PSV (black box on the top of the intake (if stock) with a few hoses running out of it. Sometimes this facker is the source of loud ticking (if its only at idle)

I didn't feel any knock at the PCV, but I changed it anyway along with spark plugs (did not fix but they were really notched out!) and air filter (didn't think this was related, but I was surprised how foul it was - will change every 20k from now on). Anyway, the engine is still ticking away. I made an appointment at the dealership next week. Sometimes I would rather live with a small problem rather than let a shop dig in and maybe cause more problems. But the tick could be a symptom of something serious and I don't want to drive around for years with this annoying tick anyway. I'll let you know how I make out.

One more thought - I wonder if I should replace my 5W30 with 10W30 now that its warmer outside. I didn't have the tick last summer, but the car had lower mileage too. Actually, the first number is for ambient viscosity and the second is for engine temp. viscosity so that shouldn't make a difference.

I had a ticking...only this one was so fast that the moment I heard it, it was too late, it threw a rod.

anyway...jaja thats my story.

Ok the ticking sound can be from a discharged valve. It get descalibrated. Sometimes it takes time, change your oil and see. You should only use lighter oil if its very cold outside like 20C or colder.

You could also check your oil pressure, should be around 57psi on idle and 70+ above 3krpms

Valve ticking

Anyone know how much or how hard it would be to get a discharged valve changed? A friend of mine that used to work at a dealership told me that the "ticking" is from a valve. I cannot take it to a dealer because of the mods I have. It started three days ago and i'm really concerned........Its really annoying to pull up to a car you wanna have a go at and you car sounds like a BOMB.

i searched and searched when i had my ticking problem on my mp3 and could find nothing!! i had almost the exact same symptoms as nvmsp. my oil level would also decrease fairly rapidly. when i would top off the oil it would stop for only a little while then it would be back. mine occured only when the rpm got above 2300 while the throttle was held in a constant "cruising" position and went all the way through the rpm range. i got so fed up with it that i took it to the dealership to get fixed. come to find out, my oil pan had a lot of small, soft, metal shavings. they then took out my crank and crank bearings and HOLY s***, the bearings were shot!! i will get my car back on monday or tuesday with a replacement engine in it.

yeah, when a bearing is damaged, the noise will come from under the engine. And it mostly happens when you release the throttle at anything over 2000rpms. When on idle, there can be no noise at all or a small ticking, but 10times louder as you decelerate.

Maybe you ran the car without oil (sampson)

maybe, but i dont think i ran it without oil. one morning i turned off my street and noticed my dummy light come on. once i found out that i had oil consumption problems i tried to keep a close eye on the oil level.

My dealer solved my ticking under warrantee this week. It's nice to hear the normal engine sound and just the quiet clicks of the fuel injectors. They replaced the intake manifold and other parts that the guy was pretty vague about. The cause written on my record states, "internal failure screws fell off valve plates".

There are several posts in this forum that are related to this same problem. Search under "engine knocking" to see. When I brought it in, the rep. had a listen and said he had never heard this before and that these engines never have problems. I mentioned that the forum is full of ticking posts and nobody seemed to have the answer. I'm happy they fixed it in a couple of days - loaner car for free. I hope the same thing doesn't happen after another 27k miles.

(My Mazda 3 loaner was a pleasure to drive: more refined car; quieter; smoother ride but less crisp handling; good pickup; more solid looking interior; still no variable intermittant wiper!; driver mirror that can view the blind spot; comfy seats, cavernous glove box, better armrest - probably perfect with 5 speed; radio controls on steering wheel.....enough! I won't want to keep my P5 another 8 years as planned if I continue.)
