ok, so i don't know if anyone else has noticed a similar noise with their 3, but everytime i'm at an idle i hear a tick from the engine. i brought it in a month ago and they replaced my drive tension pulley or something like that. now with the brand new one i still hear the same tick. asking my dad, the paranoid mechanic he is did no go and kept telling me that i'm running the car with no oil or something, except i take exceptional car of my car. . .damn toyota people. . . so anyways, i'm hoping this isn't anything major and was wondering if everyone else notices the same noise. please give me some suggestions or some sort of useful feedback.

I hear that tick, too.

I just figured that it's some electric pump actuating or something. Since I KNOW that my oil is fresh and that there's plenty of it, it's got to be something like that. There's no performace problems that'd lead me to think that it's a valve problem.

Yeah, it's a tick, but it's a consistant, regular tick that doesn't sound like a malfunction. It sounds like a purposeful tick, know what I mean?

i've had that little tick for the last 2 1/2 yrs, and a bad clunk noise for the last 2yrs, i've takin it to 3 different dealers and all they can say is "i don't know just bring it back when it gets worse". my 05 tribute has the same tick i'm not worried, mazda gota love em...(rei)

nah, i'm hearing the constant tick from under the valve cover like everyone else. glad to know it's nothing i should be really worried about. thanks everyone.

I've had three Mazdas and they all got the tick. My 626 had hydrolic valves and they were noisy as hell.

i had a ticking noise once but it got louder as you accelarated. I took it to the dealer and they changed my intake manifold, and they said the butterefly valves or the flaps that open and close i think also known as vcts were broken and they were flapping back and forth. this was happening on many other threes to i think there was some sort of recall.i hope this helps
