Engine swap

No is the simple answer

The complicated answer is yes.....but it will require so much custom work you might as well just buy a focus svt.

I was told that the engine in the p5 isn't worth doing work with the internals and I may as well get a new engine I know that the engine in my car now is the same engine as some of the old for focus cars so I though it might work , what would you recommend to drop in the p5?

You could do the KL swap. V6 from the 626/Probe. Do a search, there have been quite a few who have done so. Some work involved but some prefer that vs. turbo and the chances of going zoom-zoom-boom.

no it isn't the same, at all. there are very few "drop in" options. honestly the easiest is just to rebuild the bottom end of the stock engine and boost it. its not cheap and not easy, but its still the easiest route. KL v6's as mentioned, but its just as much work and way more of a wiring headache but it does physically drop into place (uses same mounts)

a very few other have done a BP swap. but thats got lots of fabrication and wiring to deal with as well.

there is NO easy way to make a protege5 go fast.

do yourself a favour and read through some of the turbo build threads, and gain some knowledge about what you want to take on. its obvious by the threads you have created that you have VERY limited knowledge about these cars and how to get them as fast as it seems you want it to go. not trying to be a dick, but eventually people will stop answering your questions when they have been answered many times before, or are just totally ludicrous.

Well since you're asking about boosting it too you need to figure out how much power you're going for. ( you don't ask questions about boosting motor swaps unless you're looking for more power)

Keep in mind the svt focus makes a whopping ~140 whp

150 whp= bolt ons fsze pistons and a tune

200 whp boost it on the t25 stock motor will take it, or kl swap with bolt ons

250 whp stock motor will take it but not for long, or kl swap with a lot of boltons

300 whp forged stock motor with at least a gt28, or kl swap boltons tune and a little nitrous

After 300-350 whp gears I'm the trans will start to go. Once you hit that point you won't be getting traction anyways but you could still spend the 10k. To build the trans if you want

Your motor options are kl swap or boost the stock motor if you want to keep it simple. If you have the ability tools and money I would highly advise a bp swap, much better engine and you can run an adapter and use one of the damn near indestructible toyota transmissions

Cody.....nothing wrong with asking question. I think they were answered. Can it be done, YES!.....will it be easy, NO!!!!
You have a protg...YES
You want to make it faster?....YES, it can be done.
What are your options to make the Protg faster? ( for relatively cheap).... NONE
So what are your option for making the protg faster?....

TURBO.....about 4 to 6 grand
NITROUS.....not completely reliable (for a mild build,maybe a 50 shot) 1 grand
ENGINE SWAP.....Tons of money and fabrication and downtime
BASIC BOLT ONS.... IE cold air intake, headers, cat back exhaust.....not worh it to make 140 to the wheels

I've touched on your other threads but I don't think your read them through.....How much money to you have to invest????? if you say 1grand,then forgedaboutit, now if you say you have like 4 grand then we can guide you on the best most economical path......simple. If you wanna do a motor swap you might as well build the bottom end and call it a day. Parts are already available both NEW and USED, plus you have the support of the Protg community to andswer any question should you get stuck.

Where in the hell do you get 4-6k to boost a protege? Maybe 2,000 at most unless you're paying someone. You can do eBay turbo kit and msp ecu for 1,000

You're not spending a grand on a nitrous setup, unless you're stupid.50 wet shot is safe unless you get stupid with it

The only thing you're buying when you swap the kl is the motor and ecu. It drops in and you do a little wiring work

Intake $30 header $50-75 cat back $130-150. Nothing wrong with eBay stuff unless you're too good for it

Your response is exactly why the protege platform is dieing. One person talking completely out of their ass and clearly not having a clue from the get go. 4-6k for a turbo setup? Are you stupid or ignorant? Where do you even get that? I'd ask if you're talking about the pre fabbed direct bolt on kits with instructions but even speed circuits kit wasn't that much. Do everyone a favor and figure out what you're talking about before giving your "advice"

And fiy for a grand you can do a tokico illumina strut and spring setup and bolt ons and still have enough for a tank of gas to go carve some corners

Op figure out what you want from the car. Something that handles good or a drag car or both. Grab some tools and get to work and don't let certain idiots talk you out of it

Whoa buddy.....exhale!
I seriously doubt base on the OP's question he's a Lil new to the game.....so is it fair to assume he will NOT be doing the work himself.....SO, built block that includes everything done let's jus say 2grand? ** I said includes everthing** a proper ECU? 1grand...manifold? Turbo?...where we at now?
Or will u have him jus slap some s*** on and call it a day? WHY would you even mention an eBay kit??....getting it done the RIGHT way is gonna run him right where I said

A reliable nitrous system with some sort of ecu will run a grand.....and I clearly said it's not reliable so he knows

No need to call names TWEETY bird....I would never tell anyone it's cheap to build a protege. With our platform we have to take every extra measure, so if our friend wants to turbo his protege right he'll have to spend hands down! My friend YOU are the reason why is community is dying....tell me who here turbo there protege for 2grand and still got it running RELIABLE?
you can disagree with me in a manly matter.....
OP you can listen to this bird but call me when you complete your turbo and tell me how much u really spent....

Everyone has to start somewhere so what's wrong with starting now? He's on the right path by asking questions instead of just doing

You don't need to forge the motor just to boost it. Stock motor will take 250 whp with a good tune. Multiple people on the forum making 220-250 daily driven. Someone made 270-280 and it lasted awhile

What's wrong with eBay? Do you know how many people are using eBay turbos? It's not 2001 anymore eBay journal bearings are reliably lasting 20k miles. After 20k miles $100 to rebuild it $35 to balance stick it back on and repeat. And that's just the ones that are constantly beat on. If you don't beat on them and use a proper restrictor most are lasting 40k+

You can get a full msp turbo kit for 600-800 ecu flash for 150 gasket set for 60 still under 1,000 throw in an ssafc for another 400 boost controller for 50. Fmic kit for 200 and cat back for 150. What's that? Still under 2,000. Unless you're too good for used turbos. I'll be runing a used garret gt28 making 300+ whp but that's not on a protege

There's the right way and the huge budget way. It can be done right and on a small budget, just have to be willing to use used parts and eBay parts

You don't even need to tune for a 50wet shot as it already adds the extra fuel and it's not enough to need a timing retard. I'll be using this setup on my daily driven crx and expect 0 issues. Too many rumors about nitrous that scare people off. Not saying to go throw 100 shot on a car. Do some research, 50 s*** is fine 75 a timing retard is suffecient above that you need to tune it if it's a daily

It can be done cheap, just have to expect to replace stuff slightly more often and keep up maintenance. The average cost by going used and eBay turbos is $1200-1500 depending how you want to do it and how lucky you get finding used stuff. Of course you can get brand new big name top of the line everything manifold $600 turbo $1200 intercooler $400 down pipe $500 list goes on. A friend of mine turbod his civic for $500 using used eBay stuff and a base map tune been runing over a year with no issues

Keep in mind I own multiple cars and learn a lot of different things from different forums. Celica guys have balls of steel when it comes to pushing their cars to the limits. Maybe you should do some research yourself and open your mind up

SEE....Now you're being an ADULT ( which I respect)

MY PERSONAL theory is this.....Do it ONCE and be DONE!
Yes he can be turbo on a budget, BUT in the long run I bet he will be spending MORE, and lots of ppl. do not take that into account, so that's why I said going turbo ( and being RELIABLE ) will cost him 4-6 grand. Me personally will not do ebay for the simple fact that it's hit or miss, do you really wanna chance it??? Would you buy TROJAN condoms or BROJAM condoms.....me I buy Trojans! I think half assing it is the exact reason why the Protg gets a bad rep. Its a great car but you just cant slap s*** on like a civic ( yes I've owned SEVERAL JDM cars, the real deal from JAPAN ,as in right hand drive, this is NOT my only built platform).....this is a different platform, and telling him to get a SSAUTO CHROME turbo manifold from EBAY is just the WRONG example to set for him ( I just used that as an example), am I against used parts?? **** NO, I've bought lots of s*** from members on here!! But telling him he can be turbo for 2grand and buying used/ebay parts.......C'mon bra.
I guess we can agree to disagree...the decision is his, CHEAP,FAST,RELIABLE.....pick one. I'd rather give him the sticker shock now vs later.....I think if you really wanted to do the OP justice you would let him know from jump that the rods on the protg are GARBAGE from the factory....YA you say lots of ppl running 250hp on stock s***, ud let him invest $$ into this KNOWING that them s**** go ZOOM ZOOM BOOM if you sneeze to hard?.... really?......go ahead chance it....oh lets band aid the issue and hope for the best? And oh!!....that 4-6 grand come with free PIECE OF MIND.(bang)(deadhorse

Used oem manifolds crack....now you either pay someone take it off or spend the time doing it over

Stock rods snap!...now you either pay someone take it off or spend the time doing it over

Stock oiling system starves the motor...now you either pay someone take it off or spend the time doing it over

The realization that you should have taken your time and do it RIGHT.....PRICELESS

These are just facts of the protg!....now can it be done for CHEAP? HELL ******* YEA!! But do u wanna? that's the question

Actually the eBay manifolds are pretty decent. I'm running one, just needs to be braced or the welds crack.a lot of times you have to take a dremal and clean up the welds. I'd rather take 30 minutes to do these than spend an extra $600 on a manifold. Not to mention obx has a lifetime warranty

You can buy an eBay turbo and rebuild it 10 times and it might equal out to the cost of a brand new garret. Even used Garret's when they go it's an $800 rebuild. Only reason I have one is it was a deal I couldn't pass up. It's cost effectiveness. It only takes an hour or so to rebuild them. And when you rebuild the journal bearings you get to see how simple they are

The fsde will take 200 whp all day long, more than enough power for fun. My 323 made that and it was a blast. There are people in the 220-250 area the risks are there, they know them, I'm not denying them. I pointed that out

If the motor is poorly maintained yes it will give out my na protege was treated horribly by previous owners and threw a rod just driving down the interstate cruising. If the motor was maintained by someone who cared about the car then there shouldn't be any issues

You can have cheap fast and reliable if you know where to cheap out at. Something's you don't go cheap on ie internals. I damn sure wouldn't recommend cheap rods pistons or bearings, or anything that takes more than 30 minutes to replace. Setup on my 323 is this eBay manifold, intercooler and piping. Garret gt28 custom home made down pipe. eBay oil and water lines. Act heavy duty clutch. Mega squirt 2 with custom harness. I'll have about $1400 when it's all said and done plus tuning if I don't feel comfortable doing it myself. Now if I were paying someone to do all this I could see 2,000 added to the price, especially with the harness as I'm dreading doing it. Now granted the b6t is a way better designed motor and holds more power I'll still be pushing it to it's limits. And since I know that I'm pushing it when it does give out it won't bother me. I'm waiting to see what's gona go first trans or motor. Granted it will be getting bp swapped next winter so I really don't care

I'm not trying to kid anybody, no turbo car is reliable even in stock form. The amount of times I've had oil lines leak, inter cooler piping blow off, waste gate issues, boost controller issues, the list goes on. It will be a headache it will take more maintenance, you will have to pay more attention but it's well worth it when you see the face of a cocky mustang owners face in your rear view. I can also say I can pull my down pipe off re toque the turbo bolts ( absolute b**** to get to) and have it back together in 30 minutes

I highly recommend op doing it himself. Gotta learn somehow. A lot of times you have to pick up a book and read or google it. I've never messed with wiring, don't even know how to solder but I'll be making my own wire harness. Not only for the learning experience but for the fact that I'll be able to say I made that
