Engine Immobilizer??

Does my car have it? I see a blinking key on my gauge cluster, and have the remote entry, so I guess yes 'eh? But doesn't the car key supposed to have a chip or something on it? My key doesn't, unless it's embedded into the metal or plastic part??

All GT models have it, in canada as far as i know, and is build in to the key so no extra remote(uhm)

My understanding was that it was electronic and got set with the alarm, not as part of the key (just like other aftermarket systems like compustar). The little infrared looking thing above the key is JUST a light, not a sensor (at least on the MSP).

I also thought that the CDN MSP was the only protege to come stock with an immobilizer.

I'm pretty sure it is a chip in the key, just like the PATS system in the Ford Focus.

its a Chip that sends a code to the cars computer when the key gets to "ON" If the wrong code is sent (or no code) car wont start. IF you get your key real close to a magnet kiss the chip good bye. Also if you have too much metal type stuff on your key ring it could throw it off as well, but not likely.

I'll agree with everthing but the magnet thing, I think that is a myth.

I dont think youwould ever have to replace it in the key since it is used for only a brief second..........I had my 626 for 4 years and never replace the battery in the keyless remote and that gets used alot more than the chip

I don't think it is a battery, only a chip. I have tried it, my key holder I use to have in my shop was a magnet. And it held the Focus keys lots of times.

Is there a seperate module they add if you get the alarm option? I have a GS with the immobilizer and keyless entry but no alarm...the dealer wants $500...don't know if I should go aftermarket.

You're probably right... but we're not talking about MSP or Proteges. :D
