Engine idle

When my 03 P5 sits at idle, it goes up and down from about 100rpm from stalling, and about 600....

The check engine light is on, and I am getting a EGR valve code, missfire in cylinder 1, and too much fuel in cylinder 1. Any thoughts? I am away on a course for work, so I am going to get it in to my mechanic on monday, unless there is something easy to fix.

Edit-After looking more, seems like it could be a dirty EGR Valve..... That and I am going to hit CT tonight after class to get new plugs.

Did you change the plugs? I got something like that when I tried putting in some Bosch plugs instead of NGK's (Never again!)

Going to do that tonight, I was looking at the plugs I needed the other day when I was there(CT= Canadian Tire for you americans). The only ones they had for the P5 was Champion. Is it worth it going to the more expensive ones?

I had a nasty engine idle, more like sputter after i put my header on..it would drop so low it would stall at stops, did the CEL trick with no luck and still failed like 6 times on the SMOG..my mom took it the one of her friends that works at mazda and it turned out to be two of the hoses were leaking for odd reason, he replaced them and now its growling again like that day I got her..Not sure what hoses, my mom is very car illiterate

I just had this. The EGr was coked up. I removed the intake at the TB and sprayed brake/parts cleaner down the throat to the small hole that is the EGR outlet.
Reconnected the intake & started it.

It was hard to start (took three tries and then it roared to life). It idles much better now.... If that doesn't get it - then replace it. Removing and cleaning may help - but the valve is cheap - just replace it for all the trouble it is...

dude, don't spray brake cleaner into the intake. Next time try carb cleaner, that's meant to burn up ;)

Yea, after cleaning the EGR valve, I sprayed the hell out of my throttle body and intake with carb/throttle body cleaner. I don't know where you're getting your parts P-Funk! but the EGR here at Advance Auto Parts is $170 and O'reilly auto has for $133. That's a lot of $$$. Its even $117 at onlinemazdaparts.com with Jason. I'd clean it instead ;)

Seafoam might help as well...

This is a great Product, I Just used it in my other car, 93' Honda civic, Put it in thru the main vac line to the IM and it smokes like crazy out the exhaust. Major improvement in Idle, throttle response, overall smoothness. Becareful though, and do a compression test on all cylinders first and make sure they're no more than 10 psi off from each other. and only if your O2 sensor is ancient does it kill it. I also put it in the gas tank to clean injectors, and in my crank case to clean out sludge built up, then immediate oil change. It basically steams off and breaks down the carbon on the back of your valves and on the pistons, makes your car new again!!(first)

Yes, seafoam or carb cleaner is much better (brake cleaner was all i had at the time).

After a while just cleaning it won't get it & you will have to buy one. I have been just cleaning mine for 150K miles - no problem. The frequency between cleanings is getting closer though...

hey all, so it looks like one of my spark plugs actually got closed somehow. from compression perhaps? maybe the piston hitting? anyway i can solve these problems so it doesnt happen again when i floor it? haha

Did you install the spark plugs your self or some one else? And are they specifically for the P5? (Threadjack BTW)!

HAHA, its cool about the thread jack. I figured out what I needed to, and it is in at the mechanic for some other things, so I am just having him do the work. I just dont have time to do the work myself...
