Engine designations?

The Mazda3 & Mazda6 2.3l is the same basic engine as the 2.3l Ford Focus. However, this engine is very flexible (certain performance components can be added or removed), and can also be tuned in many ways. The Focus version of the 2.3l does NOT have VVT but has PZEV (hence lower hp & torque). Even in the Mazda3 vs Mazda6, the 2.3l is even tuned differently (heck the Mazda3 2.3l is tuned differently between JDM and N. American-spec).
Edit: This engine family was designed by Mazda for the purpose of sharing it around the Ford family (Mazda is Ford's 'center of excellence' for 4-cylinder engines). This engine family also includes displacements in 1.8, and 2.0. Because of this sharing, there are plants around the world that produce engines of this engine family.

Aside from the rotary, all new generation Mazda engines are prefixed with MZR. So the 2.3l is called MZR-2.3l. But MZR doesn't just refer to this engine family, as the Mazda6 3.0l V6 also gets the MZR prefix (MZR-3.0l). So MZR is just Mazda's marketing name for all new generation engines.
On the Ford side, the '05 N. American-spec Focus will incorporate the 2.0l and 2.3l engines and here's the names they use:
Duratec 20
Duratec 20E (PZEV)
Duratec 23
Similar to Mazda, the Duratec name doesn't just apply to this engine family - the root of the Duratec name is from the Duratec 3.0l V6.
Bottom-line, it's all marketing!

Actually, the Volvo S40 and S50 are using a Volvo engine.

hmmm...i had read in the past months in road and track that both the next focus and volvo compact were going to be mazda3 clones in most respects, engines included. if thats incorrect, then i humbly retract

You're right and wrong.
World-wide, the Mazda3 has several engines available, some of which are not available in the various markets (e.g. smaller displacements and diesel not available for N. American Mazda3's). The new Volvo S40 is similar. In N. American-spec, the new Volvo S50 won't have this Mazda3/Focus 4-cylinder engine family. However, in Europe, one of these engines will be available.
In the UK anyway the 05 Volvo S40/V50 will have the 2.4L and 2.5L 5 cylinder engine with an optional 2.0L 4cyl turbo diesel engine. All will come either with a 6spd manual or the optional automatic. Also there will be a T5 turbo with AWD.

Its a 2.3L but its different from the 2.3L in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6. Its setup for RWD not FWD. The 2.3L in the Ranger have been out for years. I had a early 90's with the 2.3L Theres also a 3.0L V6 in the mid range Rangers. Wasn't there also a 2.4L in the Ranger?
