Egr delete questions

Okay so I've been doing some reading ever since I got the code p0401 I've cleared the egr valve twice over the past 6 months. Can I just do a egr delete and not have any issues with the way the car will run or drive? Will my idle smooth out? Would my car run better with the delete? I just want to double check before I make the final decision. I've read that ppl block it off and run a mini filter at the egr side and cap the exhaust manifold side? Make sense? Sound right?

OK,.. So from what I've read,... The 'Canadian' EGR will fix your EGR problems FOREVER !!!
It's a bit more involved to install because of the coolant lines but it will be your last issue with the notorious EGR.

EGR_zpsef076aae.jpg

You'll notice that it has a Canadian flag which means it is only meant for Canada,... BUT they LIE !!! You can go ahead and use it !!! (if you're foreign)

HOWEVER,... If you're hell bent on deleting your EGR,... From what I gather,... you just cut a thin piece of metal the same shape and size as the EGR gasket but DON'T cut the the holes in the middle,.. Just the holes for the bolts.

Instead of this :

EGRGasket1_zps95c13ad9.jpg

You make this:

EGRGasket2_zpse2bd5990.jpg

And install it.

Make sure you clean your EGR one last time so that it still operates BUT,.. being as no exhaust gases are going through it,.. It won't foul up. I don't think you need the filter thing on accounta there is nothing going in or out of the valve,.. BUT it does need to operate in it's normal fashion (ie. move in and out) or you will throw a CEL.

Here's what Megazuel wrote:

The Canadian Egr mod is completely compatible with US models. Not only did I put one one my personal P5 several years ago and have not had the random misfire/low idle BS that the US Egr valves caused, but I have installed the Canadian variant on several of my customer's P5's to correct the same issue over the years and not one has come back with a problem. For some reason the Canadian version is also cheaper, even with the extra cooling lines and such, go figure.

Good luck

Okay

I live in the Manitoba, Canada , if I block it off the way you have pictured will it be that harmful?? What happens if my car has the canadian egr already should I not be having these problems?

Which way is more beneficial

Harmfull to the environment,... sorta. Harmful to your car,... possibly. The EGR system puts exhaust gas into the intake in an attempt to reduce pollutants. BUT,.. it also helps to reduce cylinder temps during hard use especially. It really kicks in when you go from WOT (wide open throttle) to no throttle.

It most likely doesn't,... It was only introduced a few years ago and only for the Canadian market at first (because of our climate, we had the most problems) So those i the US had to phone a Canadian Mazda dealer to special order them. (hence the term Canadian)

RockAuto still doesn't list that particular EGR valve for the P5,.. just the regular Protege,... I made them aware of that but they have't listed it yet.

I posted a question to see if the "Canadian" version fits and works on the P5,... that's where Megazuel's comment came from.

Here's a big thread about it : http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...ian-EGR-valve-exposed&highlight=valve-exposed

High EGR flow is necessary during cruising and mid-range acceleration, when combustion temps are typically very high

Low EGR flow is needed during low speed and light load conditions

NO EGR flow should occur during conditions when EGR operation could adverseley affect engine operating efficiency or vehicle drivability - i.e. Engine warm up, Idle, WOT.

It really kicks in when you go from WOT (wide open throttle) to no throttle.

Your statement above is about the only time EGR is not good - 0TPS and 100TPS is when EGR is shut off.

From 1%-99% throttle is where EGR is open and used.

Well then,.... I got it bass ackwards.

I guess the "Canadian" EGR is the better choice then.

So,... What kind of negative effect might a block off plate cause ???

OK,... So been thinking about it,... I guess that a mini filter at the egr side would make sense then, to let fresh air into the cylinders to the appropriate cooling.

So why do we recirculate hot, dirty exhaust gas into the intake anyway ??? Wouldn't it make more sense to use cool fresh air in the first place ???

And if so what's the point of the EGR system in the first place ??? Why doesn't the regular intake system just allow more fresh air ???

The only thing I can think of is that exhaust gas has less available O2 that would assist in "burning" more gasoline producing more heat, but if the stoichiometric values are proper that shouldn't matter.

Old school cars never had EGR's. I guess expensive, unreliable systems are good for the economy.

Yes, cars before 1996 were OBD I and cars from 1996 to the present are OBD II.

Well, the name correlates to what it does, EGR = exhaust gas recirculation.
It recirculates exhaust gas back into the intake, because it is known that the exhaust gas has unburnt fuel. So if you recirculate it into the intake, the unburnt fuel will get burned up. Then, the final exhaust gases will have even less unburnt fuel. And the unburnt fuel from the exhaust gases make the car require a little less fuel from the fuel injectors, thus increasing fuel economy. I think that's the purpose.
The concept is kind of weird, since the EGR pipe is fed from only one of the runners of the exhaust manifold. You still have three runners spewing the same amount of unburnt fuel in the exhaust gases.

^nope.

OBD I and II were for emmisions equipment performance monitoring.
1. The previous post (cools the cylinder temps under lean for emmisions (not fuel economy) formation was correct...
2. Using fresh air would just cause a lean conditon without cooling effect and actually running the risk of burning up a piston :(

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation

_____________
Bottom line. Keep EGR - Go Canada! Better beer/better EGR, eh?

Correct!
works a bit opposite to what most people thing. It purpose it to cool the cylinder whilst running lean (so light loads) hence why it is not needed under WOT.

the result of EGR is better emmissios (mainly for NOx) and better fuel economy, as the more the cylinder can be cooled... the leaner the tune can be.

So for EGR
Reason - Reduce NOx emissions
Result - Cooler Piston Temps

the above alllows Further leaning of the AFR's and an increased fuel economy (under light loads).

I would agree with the canadian EGR :)

Should also add... these cars when in flying form already run pretty bloody lean under light loads, and are a bit touchy with detonation.

Removing/ blocking EGR is likeley to result in an increase in detonation, and/ or poor fuel economy (due to the ECU detecting NO EGR and running a richer map whilst EGR should be operating - 1%-99%)

and due to the fact that EGR does not operate on idle and 100% throttle... there are no performance gains on WOT.

only benefit would be... one less thing to go wrong, and would keep the insides a little but cleaner (less soot build up)

Okay

So I pulled and cleaned my egr valve yesterday and reset the ecu and got around 80kms on the car today and the check engine came on so I scanned it and it was P1170 so what can I do for that one? I know it's an issue with the top o2 sensor I will test it and see if it's working properly or the maf. The p0401 code has appeared yet.

OK,.. our car doesn't throw that code :

DTCcodes_zpse069e75a.jpg

However, I've seen this a few times before and I'm pretty sure our ECU doesn't actually send out the trouble code number to the code reader,... it instead sends the "parameters of the malfunction" to the reader and the reader picks the appropriate code for the condition.
(code p2009 "intake manifold runner ctrl circ low bank 1",... turns out it should have been DTC P1569 "Variable tumble control system (VTCS) solenoid valve circuit low input.")

So I pulled up a generic OBDII code list and found this:

P1170 HO2S Bank 1 Sensor 1 Circuit Fixed (Bank 1 Sensor 1),.... I'm pretty damn sure it doesn't mean the O2 sensor circuit has fixed itself but instead means that it is giving a fixed value.

I'm pretty sure the code for our car should be one of these (if we had a Mazda code reader from 2002).

O2codes_zps67dbf66c.jpg

I'm leaning towards P0134 (although it could be "fixed" low or high as well so make sure you check your wire from pin 60 to terminal A of your connector)

I'm thinking you may have fouled your O2 sensor.

Here's what they say about P0134:

P0134a_zps0c6ce646.jpg

P0134b_zps31b04687.jpg

P0134c_zpsfc34734f.jpg

The p0401 code has appeared yet.

I assume you forgot the word "not" in that sentence ???

Okay I have had the p0134 code before, but it hasn't showed up since I last cleared it. I have had the p0421 code so I did the non fouler trick and that fixed that issue so far. Also 6 months ago I swapped my p5 ecu with a mp3 ecu. So would that be causing the p1170?

I have a narrow band a/f gauge installed would my tie in to my top o2 sensor be causing that code?

I think it's the same service manual for the P5/MSP/MP3 so they should have the same code system. Did you get your codes read by a different reader ??? The two codes mean the same thing. That example was a bit confusing. "Intake manifold runner" is another way of saying "Variable tumble control system" (VTCS)

I could see that happening,... if their is a bad connection or shorted connection or something. I guess there could be some kind of interference caused by the monitoring circuit but it had been working.

I did remove vtcs and vics , I also get p0660 often as well p1170.

The vtcs thing was just an example of how a different code reader gives a different code for the same issue. Here's a quote from that thread,... I didn't know what an "intake manifold runner" was.

"Cel codes
Whats up guys , my p5 is throwing a P2009 and a P0421 code. The 0421 code from all the info i've gathered on the net tells me that its the pre-cat but what are my options? just get a replacement or by getting a header will i still have the MIL ? still not sure about the 2008 code"

"There is no P2009 code, so there's something wrong with that number."

"the scan tool reads p2009 intake manifold runner ctrl circ low bank 1"

"OK,... I read that whole thread and now I'm confused, so I'm gonna go and unplug my green connector and see if I get a code and what number it is.
I'm expecting to get "DTC P0660 VICS solenoid valve circuit malfunction" like what tweety got, not that P2009 like the other guys. (they have msp's which use the same service manual so I'm really not getting where the P2009 is coming from,... although "p2009 intake manifold runner ctrl circ low bank 1" could be another way of describing the VICS solenoid valve circuit.)

UPDATE,.. I unplugged my green connector and went for a drive. After about 5 minutes I got a pending trouble code DTC P1569 Variable tumble control system (VTCS) solenoid valve circuit low input.

I'm just guessing here but I'm thinking the ECU doesn't send out the actual code number and instead sends out the data related to an issue with the car and the code reader uses that data to pick the appropriate code number that represents the data describing the engine issue.
DTC P1569 and DTC P2009 are essentially describing the same thing."

I thought a generic OBDII code list might be helpful to people if they get a code that doesn't fit with our car.
Look up the code number then try to find a code for our car with the same description. :

This is (as far as I know) a very complete list of all codes any car can throw (except maybe for vehicle specific codes ???)

I did remove vtcs and vics , I also get p0660 often as well p1170.

So Anyway,... back to your original question. P0660 relates to your VICS solenoid valve. Make sure your valve is still connected electrically and that only the connecting rod on the VICS plunger is disconnected from the manifold.
The ECU needs to be "tricked" into thinking the system is operational or you'll throw a code.

(if you no longer have the vacuum plunger thing connected then maybe just plugging the vacuum line will work,... I dunno ???)

I noticed too that there is no P0660 CEL code in the generic list and my list doesn't go up to 2009

I'm thinking that might be a case where certain code readers might read a P0660 as some kind of "intake runner" type of malfunction.
