Itunes has a new App for the Itouch/Iphone that works like a Gtech/Apexi Rev/Speed Meter.............I just got it for my Itouch today, looks like fun:

I would take it's results with a grain of salt. It would be a good comparison test (maybe) when you add on new performance parts, but otherwise I don't think it would be much use. But a neat gadget nonetheless if it's cheap enough.

I'm guessing by taking 1/4 mile time plus weight into account, it could maybe estimate it.

I dont really understand how it works, the ipod touch doesnt have a gps locator does it?

no but it has accelerometers so as long as you're accelerating it should be able to take a guess at speed and distance

seriously though it's so it can automatically switch between landscape and portrait. my camera which is a few years old and not all that nice to begin with does the same thing. i assume they're relatively cheap and it's a cool thing so why not. plus with the ipod i'm sure they were planning the SDK and for people to use it in other ways that just the switching the screen so they included it in the first place

My understanding is that it is an internal device whose functions including going from landscape to portrait mode (and vise versa) when rotating the iPod Touch or iPhone.

If you're looking for a non-GPS locator application, I used Google Maps prior to buying a phone with GPS. It has a function called "My Location" that is supposed to find your location (within 1000 feet) by using cell towers.

no. the software is apple proprietary i would assume. your closest bet would probably be something with S60 as the OS since development is easy there but i'm not sure how many of those phones have accelerometers (N95 might, i know my E61 doesn't)

The real answer i wanted was WHY they thought it was a good idea and what purpose it serves. I could be a smartass and explain how positraction works (which is actually the GM patented term but its become slang for all rwd vehicles with a limited slip diff) but im going to spare the community the pain and suffering of a lecture.


On the previous note, my zune switchs from landscape to portrait but only if i tell it to, so im guessing it probably does not have the accelerometer. Niether does my phone. This is what i was wanting to know.

Sorry if my reply came across as being smartass, I really thought you were one of those "Well why the hell would anyone want an MP3 player/camera/GPS/etc in their phone?" types of people.

My Tilt does the same thing, no accelerometer present.

Honestly mckraut, i kind of am. I would love just once to buy a quality cell phone in which the phone worked flawlessly without having a digital camera, mp3 player, navigation, internet access....etc. But, sadly that doesnt exist, so i bought the best phone i could afford and it happens to have all those things, which i use but i wouldnt miss. I have a zune for mp3's, a canon dslr rebel for pictures, a laptop for internet access.....etc. But i get what you're saying.

You can also force it to switch which way it is pointing. In case you wanted to have it closed, but watch a movie sideways in widescreen or something.
