dummy question

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but I haven't purchased a CX-7 yet but am very close. I want the whole 9 yards (once you had it in one vehicle it's really hard to go back to just standard equipment) However, i feel the frustrations about this lack of IPOD support and a few other qwirks that are minor but annoying none the less.

Questions:

I know that the GT model is top of the line for the CX-7 for now but is it possible to get the non GT model with:
Leather (2 toned), the smart key, remote start, are the seats electronic?, sunroof, temperature gauge, what are the difference in the dash gauges? I'm sure I'm forgetting things so if anyone else can think of anything that you can "add-on" that would be great? Are there any other differences that I'm missing?

Also, I want the non-tech model so I can replace the stereo with one that supports all my needs (navigation, I-Pod, rear-view camera) Is this possible? Has anyone had any of this done, if so please post reviews.

Thank you guys very much for your help

, are the seats electronic?
As an option for Sport and Touring
As an option for Sport and Touring. If you get the Tech Package its built-in.
temperature gauge
Not sure.
what are the difference in the dash gauges?
I've heard they look nicer in the GT, but haven't compared (I have a GT)

It can be done if you get the right system. There were some threads about this within the past few days.

Just to clarify: It is Power Seat - not Seats.
ONLY the driver's side is powered. Unfortunately, the passenger-side is still manual.

GT has blue led lighting on the 3 dash dials, as well as a led over head to ambient-light the dash. Only avail on GT

Touring comes standard with drivers power seat w/heated leather in black or tan.

Features not on the touring:
Temp gage
instrument clusters are same but they are not blue backlit
Does not have as much aluminum colored trim inside.
Auto climate control
Fog lamps (they can be added)
Heated mirrors
some chrome external accents
Auto headlights
Hid headlights

The gt is $800 more than the touring. Personally the trim pieces and other little things are nice and they add character to the car, but too me they were not worth it.

In my area, dealers typically had between 10-30 GTs in stock, compared to 2-10 Touring. That, plus the HID headlights, fog lights and auto-climate control sealed it for me.

for 600 or so more dollars, it really makes no sense to buy a Touring. Thats why most dealers stock the Sport and GT. for the difference between the Touring and GT, unless you just dont care for the GT in appearance (the seats were actualyl a major turn off for me at the begining) it really is a dumb idea to buy the Touring model. The only give away from appearance that you KNOW a GT from the Touring is the chrome on the outside, stripe in the seat, xenon lights, and body color mirrors. There are no embelems or cladding on the outside that makes the models differ.

All the gauges are the same in the models - the GT adds the blue lighting.

For the 500 buck difference, when it came down to the Touring or the GT, it just doesnt make any sense to buy the Touring - the 500/600 bucks between the 2 is a very modest bump up in equpment. UNless you really dont like the GT, not sure why they even have that touring model

when u consider how much difference in a monthly payment the Touring to GT is, its basically gonna be 10-15 bucks/month for a hellofalot more equip and better looks w/the GT. def worth the upgrade.

Oh I feel your pain ;)

You cannot get the Smart-key without the Tech Package. Tech Package is: Smart-Key, Power Moonroof, Bose system, Navigation, Rear Camera, Sunroof, Perimeter Alarm.

You can only get the moonroof as part of either the Tech Package or the Bose/Moonroof package.

Leather is standard in the GT.
Power driver's seat is standard in the GT.
HID and blue illuminated gauges are standard on the GT.
Heated front seats and mirrors are standard in the GT.
Automatic Climate Control (includes outside temp gauge) is standard in the GT.

Remote-Start is an option for all trim levels of the car. Just make sure they install the Mazda one if you get the Tech Package.

I got the Tech package. While I like it a lot there are annoyances with the stereo system... some significant ones (at least to me). If music is important to you (as it is me) and if you want GOOD iPod support (like I do) skip the Tech Package and put in your own system... but be prepared to spend quite a bit of money. It's going to be a custom install as there are no dash or bracket kits available for the car yet - at least not for double-din units that will give you the ability to do navigation and look good. A GOOD audio shop shouldn't have a problem though. I do love the Smart Key, but if I end up ripping out my stereo system it's going to be some bucks I'm throwing out the window... and trust me, the Bose System annoyances are enough to make me consider it.

I agree the HID and fogs would be worth it. My dealer let me drive a gt w/tech for a couple days before I bought mine and I was not impressed by the auto climate. My dealer had about 35 gt only 5 did not have tech pac and they were basic no roof/bose. They had about 25 touring with a mix of packages since I wanted a sun roof and not the tech I ended up with the touring.

Ok thanks so much for helping me sort the differences :) Now help me weigh my options LOL!!! I definatly want the Smart Key ( so obviously thats the GT) I definatly want full navigation and rear view camera (another one for the GT) I DO absolutly need I-POD Support so has anyone researched an aftermarket system with all full nav, I-POD, rearview, etc. How much roughly + install would I be looking at? And is it worth it to get the GT with Nav and remove the system for an aftermarket one? Seems like an awful lot of $$.....but I'm tempted (shocked) , I love the way this vehicle looks, but it needs to be customized to our individual needs. Can I get the GT without tech and then install a nav system with I-POD support to save some bucks? Thanks again sorry for so many questions!

Amy (my name too! ;))

It's tough one, because right now, if you want GOOD iPod support (not just an FM Modulator) there's nothing available compatible with the Navigation/Bose system. So, if you buy the car with the Tech Package, you're looking at ripping out the Navigation/Bose system to get EXACTLY what you want.

Yes, it's frustrating.

I'll try to sum up my story for you. iPod support is REALLY important to me and I've done a lot of research on this... it's best for you to really look around too.

I was considering buying the GT without Tech Package and getting just the stock radio - I was then going to rip it out and put in a custom aftermarket system. Part of me is sorry I didn't go that route because the Bose System lacks some really basic features in it's 6-CD Changer (like Pause, Mute, and a TRUE Random fuction). Of course, I didn't know that until after I bought the car WITH the Tech Package.

I DO *LOVE* the Smart-Key System... but honestly, would not have known the difference had I never had it!

So I'm considering, if an iPod solution doesn't become available soon (and a GOOD one, not a lame one) ripping out the whole navigation/bose system. Not a problem to me, but then for the "Tech Package" I'll have essentially paid for a moonroof and Smart-Key system. That's a lot of money wasted.

I had two car audio places, good ones, quote me about $2000-$2500 to do a really cool all-inclusive double-din system that would do Navigation with Live Traffic Reporting, Blue Tooth, Full-Speed iPod control, Satellite Radio and Rear Camera. This did NOT include amp or speakers, so it would be hooked to the existing Bose Amp & Speakers (which might prove to be a problem, but I didn't get further in my research because I decided to wait).

The head unit would be the Alpine IVA-W200 Double Din Version.
You can see a video about it here:
CNet Review
Crutchfield sells the unit - click here

Keep in mind... places like crutchfield will list the unit as "not fitting" the CX-7. There is plenty of room for the unit but it's a hard install -- there's no dash/bezel kit or bracket kit available yet, so it's all custom. This is where a good audio shop will be essential (if you don't do custom car stereo work yourself). You'll want to research a place locally and really talk to the people working there. I'd also try to go to one familiar with Mazdas.

Another issue is the upper dash display. This area displays some basic information from the Factory/Bose Radio (like station, track number, seconds into the song)... currently there's no way to get an aftermarket radio to play nice with this display, so with any aftermarket system the area will become "dead" -- it will just show your clock on the left and climate control settings on the right - the center will always be blank.

Alpine makes the best iPod capable radios because they offer a connection to your iPod called "Full-Speed" which makes scrolling through your songs and playlist almost as fast as doing it natively on the iPod. My husband has an Alpine system in his car with iPod support (not the one above) and it ROCKS. The iPod can be completely and intuitively controlled all through the radio itself.

While the Smart-Key system is nice, and the moonroof is great, you have to decide if these two things alone are worth the cost of the Tech Package if you're just going to rip out the Navigation/Bose system. You'll want to haggle your ass off with the salesperson and get the lowest price possible. I've heard advice from "expert hagglers" that say to go as far as telling them you won't pay for a radio you're not going to use so the dealership should rip it out and not charge you... but I honestly can't tell you I've heard of ANYONE being successful doing something like that, especially with something like a Tech Package that includes Navigation. I didn't even attempt to go that route (maybe my mistake).

I've already decided at this point that if Mazda doesn't come up with the decent solution soon I'm going for the IVA-W200... but I am going to wait it out a little while longer... just be prepared, if you decide to wait also, to be a bit frustrated with the existing system. It sounds like music is important to you, and I can totally relate -- I LIVE by my iPod for music... and while MP3 CDs have been an okay solution in the meantime, the radio's other shortcomings have become obvious and aggravating (not to mention burning MP3 CDs is a pain in the you-know-what!). On the positive side, I do think the Bose System SOUNDS really good (best "factory" system I've heard, by far), the satellite radio works perfectly and displays channel, song title, artist, etc. on the nav screen, and MP3 CDs play great and display all song information on the nav screen as well... problem is, lack of Pause, lack of Mute, and lack of a truly good Random fuction are enough to make me want to pull my hair out some days... and I cannot believe an advanced system like this lacks such basic features!

I REALLY wish Mazda had thought this out ahead of time. A cool touch-screen system like they offer with the Tech Package could have easily accommodated decent iPod support if they had made it a priority.
