DSC Off

So after 2500k of owning the MS3, I tried the "turn off DSC/ traction for 5 sceonds before starting the car." for the 1st time.

The car def feels stronger betwen 1st and 2nd. Of course, no dyno to support the fact but 2500k of driving this car under "controlled" mode, it feels different.

It feels faster because of traction control being turned off. As soon as the ecu sees that the wheels are losing traction, it slows itself down.
This is why..

i feel its the same as just turning off DSC...some tests have confirmed that in 2nd gear you reach the same boost levels regardless whether DSC is on....just te DSC button is lit, both the DSC and TC, etc.

I can't tell you if there is any power difference between DSC ON or OFF but I've done a few datalogs and boost, timing and throttle (as long as the tires aren't spinning) are the same. I don't think you're getting any more power but the car won't close the throttle on you if tires are spinning.

Track times with DSC On and Off

I have been to the track twice (Streets of Willow Springs) and there is a difference.

Both on - get the traction light throughout the course and reduced boost. However, the car handles pretty good at the limit and the computer keeps the rear in check.

DSC off - the rear wants to slide more and the car feels different, hard to describe but loose.

DSC and Traction off - car seemed more predictable, increased my time about a 1 second (approximately 100 feet), stock tires could not handle the power of acceleration in 3rd gear.

I suggest for the first couple of times you go to a track - keep them both on and let the nannies do their thing - your tires will thank you for it. I noticed considerable more wear on the tires when the DSC and TC was off and only gained a second.

I have about two moer track days left on the stock tires and then I need some new ones. There are a few more mods I want to make - Fuel pump upgrade and the DRZ engine mount.

Current mods are MS CAI, MS Sport Springs and Rx8 rims.

Cheers!

Peter

Only gained a second...that's huge, I'd say that was well worth it. But I do agree to have experienced drivers do this, you can get sideways in a hurry if you don't know what you're doing.

He said "increased my time about a second." I assume with this statment he means he was slower.

He actually said both but I think he meant "gained a second"

Off topic sort of, but I was just wondering this with regards to TCS. Does it have any impact when you dyno? Example, does the ECU detect that the rear wheels are not moving and cut power? If so, how do you get around it? Just curious...

Thats a good question. When I dyno'd mine I left everything (DCS/TCS) on. I did get an ABS light after the dyno that stayed on for a few miles afterwards. I assumed it was due to the rear wheels not matching the fronts during the run. Can't really tell you if it made a power difference though. Next time I get it dyno'd, I'll do one run with it on and one with it off and log everything.

I had my rears break loose the first time just the other day around a seemingly average turn after picking up the 6 year old. It's kind of a dog leg type turn, maybe a 5% bank, not much at all, but I was going, I don't know, maybe 40? There was this 'feeling' I couldn't place at first because a) it was MUCH different than in my hippo TBird, and b) I haven't driven my TBird in like a year. The feeling was drifting, lmao. That was fun; I guess I knew but never liminally thought about the possibility of a FWD car swinging the ass-end out. It was weird, I've never drifted out a FWD, just RWD, and those were all heavy, my Akemi let go and grabbed pretty much without the same 'warning' signs a heavy, over-powered RWD car gives. Now I know, however... And knowing is half the battle.

I am used to feeling the car 'swing' out and 'swing' or 'grab' into the end of the drift/let go. This car just goes and comes back with none of that feeling at all because the rear is so light and the front is pulling that 'whip' feeling right out of the inertial applications on the driver.

Track time clarification

Sorry guys

Streets of Willow Clockwise 1.800 miles 14 turns

Best time of the day with DSC and Traction Control = 1.37.108

Best time of the day without DSC or TC = 1.36.617

So actually a 1/2 second faster

Both runs without traffic and my times are pretty consistent throughout the day.

Stock brakes held up great I need to push them a little more. Stock tires are a major concern they are very predictable and grip fairly well however, they are now wearing fast and I think I might get some $150 Falken azinas as my next tire. Need more grip!

Cheers!

Ok, I tried this trick of turning dsc and traction control off by holding the dsc button down until the dsc light goes off again and I still had traction control kicking in. Has anyone been able to do this in snow and ice? Was a real let down having the tcs kick in when I was trying to get myself out of the snow.

Ok, I got it now. Need to hold the button down before starting and get both the DSC and TCS lights to stay on. Could have really used this 3 nights ago.
