Dropped something in the transmission! Help!

I was seeing if my transmission fluid bottle could be used directly to fill, so I stuck it in the hole to see if it would fit. Good news, it fit. Bad news, I accidentally forgot to take off the loose little cap about the size of a pencil tip in front, and when I was pulling the bottle out it came off. Now it's inside. Can I get it out without taking apart the transmission because I have no idea how? I havn't emptied the fluid, by the way. Thanks!! (headshake

good job.

sorry, but since it's plastic your not getting it with the magnet in the bottom.

have you looked in with a flashlight?it maybe just right there.

I think I can feel it with my fingertip in the hole, floating there just out of reach... wonder if I can use something sticky to get it out?? But I don't wanna get anything more in there... Doh!

If the fluid is drained, will it go to the bottom? I don't know how the area is shaped inside...

needle nose pliers? And I dunno...I was just throwing out a suggestion. If it's that close, u may be able to coax it out...wire clothes hanger maybe (make a little hook...)

if it's floating, why not just put more tranny fluid in and let it float to the top?

then, just siphon off the excess

wait, do you have an auto or a manual (yes, they're different...). The manual, the "fill hole" actualy doubles as a level indicator. IE on a flat surface, it will not fill past the hole, and that's how much fluid you should have. If you have a manual, maybe try putting a lil extra in, and see if it just floats uut...

Just keep it in there. It's plastic and will either get ground up or melt.

I don't suggest this though...I personally would take it out.

I'll vote for this. Can't tell you how many times this thing has bailed me out in different situations. Btw, how does one have a .jpg of a 'flexible tool claw' just laying around ?

probably is...as suck as our tranny's our, they're not THAT suck. I still think that getting it out is probably a good idea...

Well I tried a lot of stuff with the tools I had (including chopsticks) and none of it worked. Eventually when I tried overfilling with oil, I think the cap got pushed further into the inside and was never felt again. Didn't come out the drain hole when I opened that, either, so I just let it be and finished the oil change.

Car drove fine, I'm just praying it doesn't cause some catastropic transmission failure somewhere down the road. I don't know much about the composition of the parts inside, but I'm guessing they're all fairly strong metal parts, and a flimsy cap thing like that wouldn't cause damage even if it did get caught somehow. Well, I'm hoping. I think I'll bus to my exam tomorrow... -_-'

On another note, there was some kind of heavy metalic thing loose, sitting just inside the drain hole, but not small enough to fall out. It had black sludge all over it. I'm guessing it's a magnet...

Well, thanks for the suggestions, here's to living through stupidity! (drinks)

Yup, that is a magnet. Clean it, keep it in there. If your tranny blows up, take it in, claim nothing.

Hey yeah just so ya know. I had something like this happen once on one of my old Jetta's. Let's just say within about a week We had to take the tranny out and rip it apart because it got stuck in reverse and would not come out. So just to be on the look out. Best of luck to ya!
