Driving lowered P5 in winter bad idea? (huh)

2002.5 Mazda Protege 5
I have yet to see a winter with my 2002 P5. I used to drive a 2000 Protege and that did OK in winter with descent snows. I live in Central New York where the winters tend to get pretty nasty. Well my P5 has the MS3 factory installed lowering springs, about 2'' down, and I was thinking should I just invest in a winter rat or would I be alright with 4 blizzaks and see how it goes? lemme know what ya think

I don't have to make that decision where I live but if I did my good car would never see snow/ice/salt. Buy a beater jeep or truck so you don't mind if it get's a bump or 2 or gets eat up with salt....Just my opinion. Would involve separate insurance/registration/inspection/maintenance costs though.....4wd & a good heater/def..........

I've driven mine thru 2 winters so far. The first one I was bone stock. 2nd winter was on Eibach Pro Kit springs and some Blizzak's all around. Not a problem at all. I just try to wash it as much as I can when the weather permits. I will also fire up the salamander in the garage and let the car thaw on days when it's really loaded down with snow.......

I've driven my P5 with Tein S techs in one winter already and it wasn't too bad. Just keep in mind that a stiffly spring very low car is going to suck in any kind of deep snow and you'll be alright.

BTW, I don't know if you ment MP3 or MSP springs, but neither is anywhere near a 2" drop.

^I was wondering about that also...

And this will be my second winter with my Eibachs. No problems at all.

I've drievn my p5 w/ it lowered abot 2" and drove thru about 3-4 inches of snow w/ minimal problems.

don't sweat it bro.

went through one winter on lowering springs. drove through mad snow.

let it snow!

I bought my P5 in Feb. of '05 so I haven't had a chance to test it in the snow or not. Either way, I can't see it doing to bad. Being low is only going to be effected by how many inches are on the ground! Hell, I have even driven my del Sol that is 3in OFF the ground in snow and it did alright. Just have the right tires! ;)

Its not a big deal at all

I've driven 3 lowered cars in the snow and this coming winter will be my 4th different car thats lowered (p5 with eibachs). I had snow tires on all my other vehicles and never had a probelm. 94 Celica was lowered 2.5, 98 prelude was lowered 2.5, 98 integra gsr was lowered 2 inches.

My last couple winters went really well though, when i didn't have a lowered car :).. i still miss the jeep

Cool jeep!

i survived 3 winters lowered on Eibach pro-kits in Toronto winter weather. it was fine. of course, i used snow tires, but the lowering didn't cause too much of a problem. mostly hear a few scrapes of ice chunks or whatever along the underside.

Though I had a lame winter overhere last year, I dropped on espelirs rightbefore snow flew. I went snowdriving though just to see. no real issues. ALot of other cars omn the road sit as low or lower, so in the deep stuff alot of times they take care of it for you. If anything I thin lowered/snowtires is a pretty fun handling combo. just test your limits in a wide open area first.

BTW, lowered+stock MSPshoes=nogood.

If you're gonna playin the snow at all, invest in appropriate rubber.

I picked up my 5 last January, had no issues. I don't go as fast as I used to, but I never got stuck.

good luck!

I've got some blizzak ws-50 on steel wheels from my old p5 for sale. I don't have the car any more so these wheels are sitting in my garage. I live in wisonsin and they were great for two and a half seasons. I also had a eibach pro kit. Just need to get rid of them so make me an offer.

wheels n tires

i would probably be interested in buying them, i live in new york, idk what shipping would be like, but i have to make sure im not getting a winter rat first, i'll keep u posted, how about 175 bucks?
