Doing a Custom FMIC

:
2003.5 MSP
I want to know what would I need to know besides the dimensions of a IC core to do a custom one?? I would like to go the same route as the Perrin FMIC because its the most direct one. And I looked at the FMIC and SMIC thread for info.

The Core size I'm looking at right now is: 20"x6.5"x3

22"X6"X3" 22X6.5X3.5

24"X6"X3" 24X6.5X3.5

I am looking at the price it would cost for a nice interrcooler core and how much it would cost to make some pipes. I want to see if I cang et away with getting a custom for cheaper or buying a pre-built FMIC kit.

Anyone that has hook-ups with IC pipes, please PM, And any help Where can I find a core that has the inlets in the same direction as the Perrin, so I can get the same pipe routing.

thanks

So far I've fond one from Bell Intercoolers the dimension is and price

But I don't know If the inlet is the same as the Perrin. ANd can somone clear up for me If I need the same style intercooler as the perrin to achieve the pipe routing they ahve for our car??

if you don't mind a tube fin design... i just ordered one from johnnyracecar.com and from what i hear it's awesome... will be instaled next weekend and i'll give my review.

haven't yet... but i was quoted 250 from matrix performance as a good friend hookup, generally it goes for 350 for aluminum piping or slightly more... since this is custom i'll also be relocating the MAF to right before the TB and i'll be blowing off atmospheric ... turbo----FMIC-----BOV----MAFS----]TB[

Yea, I want to get piping done too, SS though and want to be able to relocate the MAF...I plan on using the turbo hoses sri if i have enough left over. be able to use my forge bov...too

Finding a nice real nice core, isn't to hard, its just getting the piping done for it, like the perrin I want it as direct as possible...hmmm...

if you think about it (although i don't really know this for sure) when it comes to IC piping i don't think it's as big of a deal if it's direct, as long as you don't use a great deal of piping. pressure loss shouldn't be thAt great. is stainless more espensive or cheaper? i think it's more heavy.

not doing a custom setup but i have a begi fmic on the way, i hope it rocks. sickspeed will you have your fmic bolted for the meet?

i get paid the thursday before the meet. i'm making an appointment for that day to have it plumbed... hopefully it'll be ready by friday and i can drive it up saturday... if he can't guarantee it by friday then no it won't be ready. (ghey)

i dont remember my intercooler size, just wanted to say to keep in mind that with the perrin set-up the option for a bigger radiator will no longer be available. but of course that all depends what you have instore for your ride.

Seems like a lot of ppl are going the custom route here lately...............hell yea....

I made my own IC setup for the MSP. PM me if you have any Q's. If your smart about what you buy and use, you will easily spend much less going the custom route. I thought of a few random notes I felt could help.......

Good choice on the IC, have you looked at treadstone IC's? Treadstone IC's are built exactly from bell/spearco designs, but are nearly half the price. The only thing potentially different is the alloy. I talked to a rep. a while back and he couldn't remember what alloy is used.......He looked it up for me but I forgot to call back the next day. (btw, alloy is very important) Go with the bell if you can afford it!

*As far as piping is concerned, I found that there isn't a very big selection for universal or generic IC piping. One of the best kits I found was on ebay..... piping

*If your wanting the 'perrin' design, you will probably need that 180 bend to come off the turbo. From my experience, I found thats the best way to get the piping down and out of the way without having to make any sharp bends to the IC.

*Have you looked at my thread on a GI for a few custom IC kits? If you haven't, you can find if in my user info under 'started threads'....... look at the pics.......The pipes are unfinished but they show a design thats similar to what you are wanting.

*The 6.5" IC could possibly hit the bottom of your front lip. there are several plastic tabs on the lip you have to cut down for a 6" to fit, I don't know if they can be shaved enough for a 6.5". You may be able to locate the IC further back towards the radiator to gain a little clearance.

*heres another idea...you could do what I'm considering, which is cutting apprx. 1-2" off the bottom of your bumper support beam out to locate the IC higher. I'm probably doing it so that all my IC sees direct airflow. Raising your IC will get rid of pretty much any clearance issues you may have

* get all your piping welded if possibly

* use a hump hose somwhere

* Avoid using sharp bends if possible

* Buy quality clamps and couplers the first time around.......I've had cheap clamps and couplers and absolutly hated them. They're not worth the money you save!

* logical but noteworthy, use as few of couplers as you can. The less you have the less of a chance you will have of getting leaks or blowing off a coupling
* get a good metal saw and sawblock if you cutting it by hand. don't forget to use a file to clean up the cuts

thats all I can think of for now

You can always pick up used fmic kits for $500-600!
yeah but hes gonna have a brand new setup that is exactly what he wants for around 650

(sorry i didnt read the post above mine befor writing this second time today)

Nice ZenProtege ! I'll be looking at your posting and doing more further research! Its either custom or Pre-made....Anything else you can think of???

We sell our MSP FMIC piping kit for $129. It also includes our SRI pipe as well. You will need a 24x6xwhatever thickness you want core. We also sell cores. Spearco 24x6x3.5" is $175 and 24x6x3.5" Garrett is $225

Oh! geez Why didn't I know this earlier!! Hmmm!! I might just go with you guys!! I'm getting a bit excited, hmmmm...let me come down and think...

is there something I can see on the website?? How would I order it If I were to do this? Say I just buy a Core from you, I can go any route I want for piping right??

The piping can be seen on our MSP FMIC kit,Sleeper and Thumper setups. It's the same pipe routing. As for the core, yes you can route your pipes how you want. The 24" long core filles the lower grill from side to side very well. IoN and myself use the 24" long cores. As for ordering it, PM me.
We have quit a bit of stuff for the DIY guys. Bends, silicone, piping, etc. We don't advertise it because most do not want to do it themselves.

woah i wish i would have known all this!!!

2 questions... with the piping kit, is that core = 24 or with end tanks 24?

this is the IC i bought

6ma1.jpg

Core size: 25 wide X 5.875 tall X 2.75 deep

Overall: 30 from outside of end tank to outside of end tank X 6.5 tall X 3.125 at the thickest

Standard Piping: 2.5 OD X .065 wall X 2 long

also will your piping kit work with this end tank design? or could it be incorperated to do so? if so i'd be more than happy to give you the business.

(i think i will need to remove the fogs and run the IC pipe through where the fogs were. which i am willing to do)
